Overview

Zul'Farrak is the Sandfury trolls' walled city in the Tanaris desert, and you fight through it under open sky. It's famous for one fight above all: the stairs event, where you free a band of prisoners at the top of the city's pyramid and hold the stairs against wave after wave of trolls.

The rest is a tour of the city's bosses, plus one you summon yourself: Gahz'rilla, the hydra that answers the gong. Nearly every quest here is open to both factions, so it's a strong run for Horde and Alliance alike.

Getting there

Zul'Farrak's walls rise in the northwest of Tanaris. Both factions fly to Gadgetzan and ride northwest across the desert. Gadgetzan is also where four of the quests hand in, so it's your base for the run.

Bosses

Hydromancer Velratha

Velratha is a hydromancer, so she fights with spells. Interrupt her, and pull her around a corner so she comes to your tank instead of casting from range.

Antu'sul

Level 48EliteShow on map: Antu'sul

Antu'sul, the Overseer of Sul, heals with Healing Wave of Antu'sul: interrupt it every time, or the fight drags on. He doesn't stay alone, either. During the fight he summons Servants of Antu'sul, elite adds that need a tank's attention.

His Sang'thraze the Deflector is half of a bigger prize: combine it with Jang'thraze the Protector from Chief Ukorz Sandscalp to form Sul'thraze the Lasher.

Tank

Hold Antu'sul where your interrupters can reach him, and pick up each Servant of Antu'sul as it arrives.

Healer

Every Servant adds damage on the tank, and every heal he lands drags the fight out. Pace your mana.

Damage

Kick, stun or silence every Healing Wave of Antu'sul, and focus one target at a time.

Theka the Martyr

Theka the Martyr is undead, unlike most of the city's trolls. Partway through the fight he casts Theka Transform and changes form, and while it lasts he's immune to Physical and Shadow damage. Switch to fire, frost, nature, arcane or holy damage, or hold your attacks until he changes back. He also casts Fevered Plague, a disease: cure it if your group can.

  • Tank: Hold him in place through the transform. Your physical attacks won't hurt him while it lasts.
  • Healer: Cure Fevered Plague when you can, and keep the tank steady through the transform.
  • Damage: When he transforms, stop physical and shadow damage: switch schools, use a wand that isn't shadow, or wait it out.

Zum'rah holds the city's graveyard. Walk in and the dead rise from the graves around you: elite Zul'Farrak Zombies and non-elite Zul'Farrak Dead Heroes. In the fight he plants a Ward of Zum'rah totem that keeps calling Skeletons of Zum'rah while it stands. Kill the ward the moment it lands.

His Zum'rah's Vexing Cane is a caster staff with Intellect, Stamina and 21 spell power.

Tank

Gather the zombies as they rise so nothing runs loose, then pick up Zum'rah.

Healer

Stay close to the group so the tank can peel any zombie off you.

Damage

Kill the Ward of Zum'rah first. AoE clears the Dead Heroes, but the Zombies are elite: focus them down one at a time, then finish Zum'rah.

Nekrum Gutchewer

Nekrum doesn't wait in a room: he's the last wave of the stairs event.

At the top of the pyramid, the Sandfury hold Sergeant Bly and his crew in cages. Kill the Sandfury Executioner for the Executioner's Key and open the cages. Freeing the prisoners starts the event: Sandfury trolls charge up the stairs in waves, and Bly's crew fights beside you. Hold the top of the stairs until the waves stop. Nekrum Gutchewer and Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz come up last.

When the stairs are clear, talk to Weegli Blastfuse: he blows open the troll door. Keep him alive through the waves.

  • Tank: Hold the top of the stairs so every wave has to come up to you.
  • Healer: Stand behind the tank at the top, and save mana for Nekrum and Sezz'ziz at the end.
  • Damage: AoE the waves while they're bunched on the stairs, and save your cooldowns for the last wave.

Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz

Level 47Elite

Sezz'ziz comes up the stairs with Nekrum at the end of the event. He's a caster: the tank holds Nekrum while the damage dealers interrupt Sezz'ziz and kill him first.

His Diabolic Skiver is a polearm whose proc delivers a fatal wound for 160 to 180 damage.

Loot (1)

Gahz'rilla

Level 46EliteShow on map: Gahz'rilla

Gahz'rilla only appears when you call him. Use the Mallet of Zul'Farrak at the Gong of Zul'Farrak and the hydra comes to fight. To make the mallet, use the Sacred Mallet at the Jintha'Alor Altar.

His Gahz'rilla Slam hits everyone near him and knocks them back. Ranged and healers stand back; melee get thrown and go straight back in.

His Gahz'rilla Fang is a dagger whose proc surrounds you with electricity for 15 seconds, dealing 10 Nature damage to anyone who strikes you.

Tank

Hold him in place, turned away from the group.

Healer

Stay out of Slam range and heal the melee after every knockback.

Damage

Ranged stay back. Melee get back in fast after each Slam.

Chief Ukorz Sandscalp

Level 48EliteFinal bossShow on map: Chief Ukorz Sandscalp

The chief waits at the end with Ruuzlu, and the two fight together. Pull them as a pair: the tank holds both, or an off-tank takes Ruuzlu, and the group kills one at a time.

His Jang'thraze the Protector combines with Sang'thraze the Deflector from Antu'sul into Sul'thraze the Lasher.

Tank

Grab both on the pull and keep them together, turned away from the group.

Healer

Two elites on one tank means steady, heavy healing. Start the fight at full mana.

Damage

Pick one target and stay on it until it dies.

Trash and pulls

  • Zul'Farrak is open ground with few corners. Pull each pack back to a spot out of sight of the next one before you fight.
  • Kill any Greater Healing Ward a caster drops the moment it lands.
  • The Sandfury trolls are humanoids, so humanoid crowd control works on most pulls. The undead, the scarabs and the basilisks are the exceptions.
  • Don't open the cages until the whole group is at full health and mana. Once the prisoners are free, the waves don't wait.

Loot

Zul'Farrak's loot is spread across the city, and two of its drops build one weapon. The standouts:

Tips

  • Stack the Gadgetzan quests before you ride out: Tran'rek, Trenton Lighthammer and Chief Engineer Bilgewhizzle all hand in there.
  • Bring the Mallet of Zul'Farrak if anyone in the group has one. Gahz'rilla doesn't appear without it.
  • Open the cages only when everyone is ready, and keep Weegli Blastfuse alive through the waves.
  • Keep both Sang'thraze and Jang'thraze: together they make Sul'thraze the Lasher.
  • Interrupt every Healing Wave of Antu'sul and kill every Ward of Zum'rah on sight.
  • When Theka the Martyr transforms, stop physical and shadow damage until he changes back.
