Guide
Every Hunter pet family in WoW Forever, the new Fox included: what each family brings, the taming quest, where to tame the best pets by level, how pets scale with your gear, Scare Beast, training and the best pets for leveling, dungeons and PvP.
Written by stillsixty staff.
Your pet is half of your damage while leveling and the reason a Hunter rarely needs a group to kill an elite. Forever keeps the familiar families and adds one, the Fox, but it changes how pets work underneath: they scale with your own gear, every family has a signature ability of its own, and fast-attacking beasts keep their speed when you tame them.
The pet finder lists every tameable beast by family, level, zone and attack speed. This guide tells you which ones are worth the trip.
| Change | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Pets scale with your gear | Your pet's stats come from your own. Every upgrade you put on makes your pet hit harder and live longer too. In exchange, buffs that raise stats (Mark of the Wild, Blessing of Kings and the like) no longer land on your pet. |
| Crit and Expertise | Your pet uses the higher of your melee or ranged crit chance, so a bow-focused Hunter no longer has a pet that crits less than they do. Your Expertise counts for the pet as well, so it gets dodged and parried less. |
| Tame at your level | You can't tame a beast above your own level. Want a level-37 rare? Be level 37. |
| A signature for every family | Every family learns Bite or Claw (some both) and Dive or Dash, plus one ability nobody else has: Swipe for bears, Web for spiders, Dust Cloud for tallstriders and so on. The table below lists them all. |
| Speed survives untraining | A fast pet keeps its attack speed when you reset its training, so untraining to try new abilities costs you nothing. |
| Aggressive is back | You set the stance in the pet tab of your spellbook. |
| Scare Beast has a cooldown | 30 seconds now, at every rank. |
| Retuned abilities | Crocolisk Dismember cuts healing by 25% for 6 seconds every 15 seconds. Bat Sonic Blast slows spellcasting by 30% for 20 seconds, once a minute. Bird of Prey Mine! disarms for 3 seconds every 90 seconds. |
The Owl family is now called Bird of Prey. Bats and birds of prey lost Screech, and raptors lost Cobra Reflexes.
At level 10 your class trainer sends you on three short tames with a Taming Rod. Each one teaches you the basics on a beast near your starting area, and the last step sends you to a capital's Hunter trainer to learn the pet spells. After that, Tame Beast, Call Pet, Revive Pet, Feed Pet and Beast Training are yours. None of them goes on your action bars by itself, so drag them on from the spellbook before you leave the trainer.
Humans have a Hunter chain of their own now, starting with Josephine Carson in Elwynn Forest:
Skyborne Hunters do theirs on Zephras Isle with Quel'ana Quickgale in Valanaar, and one of the three tames is a Vuldren Alpha, a fox:
The other races keep their classic chains: Dwarves with Grif Wildheart in Kharanos (Taming the Beast), Night Elves with Dazalar in Dolanaar (Taming the Beast), Tauren with Yaw Sharpmane in Bloodhoof Village (Taming the Beast), Orcs and Trolls with Thotar in Razor Hill (Taming the Beast).
Tame your keeper on the way out. Your first real pet doesn't have to be a starter-zone animal. If a rare from the list below lives nearby, finish the quest, then go and tame it at its level.
Clear the area first. Taming takes a long cast and any hit interrupts it. Kill or fear anything wandering nearby before you start.
The bonus is what the family gets on top of the base pet: more damage, more armor or more health, or less of one to pay for another. Each name opens the family page with every ability rank and the beasts that teach it.

| [Wind Serpent](/pet/27) | +7% damage. Lightning Breath is instant Nature damage from range. Eats fish, cheese and bread. |
| [Wolf](/pet/1) | +5% armor. Furious Howl raises the melee attack power of party and raid members within 15 yards for a minute. Eats meat. |
Most signature abilities arrive at pet level 12 and gain a rank every 12 levels after that, up to 60. Furious Howl, Scorpid Poison and Demoralizing Screech start at 8 or 10; Prowl and Thunderstomp start at 30, Mine! at 10.
Every fox is a Vuldren on Zephras Isle, the Skyborne starting island, at levels 1 to 10. The family is the Skyborne Hunter's to collect: tame one before you leave the island. Trickster's Dance unlocks when the fox reaches 20.
Pick a pet in your level range: you tame at your level or below, and a pet levels with you from there. Fast attackers keep their speed after taming, which means steadier threat and more chances to crit. Every beast below is in the pet finder with its attack speed and abilities.
| Beast | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|
| The Rake (cat, 10) | A rare cat in Mulgore with a 1.2-second attack, the fastest pet you can get at 10. |
| Ghostfang (cat, 10) | A rare blue cat near the Wetlands tunnel in Dun Morogh. It knows no abilities, so it's a look rather than a power pick. It comes back about half an hour after someone tames it. |
| Death Flayer (scorpid, 11) | A rare scorpid in Durotar with a 1.6-second attack, and it teaches Claw rank 2 and Scorpid Poison rank 1. |
| Coldrasp (wolf, 12) | A pale blue spirit wolf in the Whispering Forest of Tirisfal Glades, 1.5-second attack, and it knows Furious Howl. It takes hours to come back, so be first. |
| Jai'vhanel (bird of prey, 12) | A black owl in Darkshore on a short respawn: if someone beats you to it, it's back in a couple of minutes. |
| Broodling (spider, 14) | In the first packs at the Ruins of Lordaeron. Note it attacks every 2 seconds once tamed, not 1.5 as in the wild. |
| Moonstalker (cat, 14–15) | A common cat in Darkshore with a 1.3-second attack. No camping needed. |
| Beast | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|
| Mist Howler (wolf, 22) | A rare wolf in Ashenvale with a 1.3-second attack that teaches Furious Howl rank 1. |
| Humar the Pridelord (cat, 23) | A rare elite lion in the Barrens, 1.3-second attack. Bring a friend or a good Scare Beast. |
| Mountain lions (cat, 23–28) | Starving and Feral Mountain Lions in Hillsbrad Foothills and Needles Cougars in Thousand Needles all attack every 1.2 seconds, and they're common. |
| Ghostpaw Alpha (wolf, 27–28) | A common Ashenvale wolf at 1.3 seconds that teaches Bite rank 4 and Furious Howl rank 2. |
| Swamp Jaguar (cat, 36–37) | Swamp of Sorrows, 1.2 seconds, common. |
| Broken Tooth (cat, 37) | The classic: a rare Badlands cat that attacks every second, the fastest pet in the game, and it teaches Dash rank 1. |
| Beast | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|
| King Bangalash (cat, 43) | The elite tiger king of Stranglethorn Vale, 1.4 seconds; teaches Dash rank 2 and Claw rank 6. |
| Snarler (wolf, 42) | A rare Feralas wolf that teaches Bite rank 6 and Furious Howl rank 3. |
| Ravage (hyena, 51) | A rare Blasted Lands hyena at 1.3 seconds that teaches Dash rank 3. |
| Deathmaw (wolf, 53) | A rare Burning Steppes wolf at 1.2 seconds: the fast wolf for a raid Hunter. |
| Rak'shiri (cat, 57) | A rare Winterspring frostsaber at 1.5 seconds that teaches Dash rank 3. The common Frostsabers around it share the speed. |
Scare Beast sends a beast running for 10 seconds (15 at rank 2, from level 30; 20 at rank 3, from 46). It now has a 30-second cooldown, so you get one per tame attempt, not one per add.
Beast Training is where your pet learns its abilities. You learn a rank by taming a beast that already knows it and letting it use the ability in a fight or two. Once you know the rank, call your real pet back and teach it. The family page and the pet finder show which beasts teach what.
A boar for the first levels (Charge gets the pet on the mob before your second shot), then a bear from 12: Swipe hits three mobs, which holds double pulls off you. Beast Mastery Hunters who want raw speed take a fast cat like The Rake or Broken Tooth and let Bestial Wrath carry the hard pulls. A turtle is the safe tank for pulls you shouldn't take, and a gorilla from 30 holds a whole pack with Thunderstomp.
Pick what helps the group, not just your meter. A wolf gives Furious Howl to the melee standing next to it. A tallstrider strips armor from the boss for every physical attacker. A carrion bird softens trash hits for the tank. If your group already has those covered, a raptor or a fast cat adds the most damage of its own.
A crocolisk for kill windows: Dismember cuts the healing your target gets. A bat against casters, a bird of prey against melee: Mine! disarms them for 3 seconds. A spider or a crab keeps a runner close. Pair any of them with Intimidation for a 3-second stun.
