What to know

Hunt it after dark, server time: most groups start finding it around 21:00, a few as early as 18:30. Its walk begins in the sea off the western shore and follows the big river inland to the dam, where it disappears. Up to three may be out together, and each is back within half an hour. Snares stick, so a ranged group can kite it along the bank.

Using the loot

• One drops for every player in the group.

• Swap the innards with Rethiel the Greenwarden (Alliance) for this ring. Any class and level can wear it; you can own only one.

Look over the lion pride north of Ratchet: the black one resting by the large tree is Humar, in his Classic spot. If someone beat you to him, expect a long wait: Classic players counted eight to twelve hours between spawns.

Check the fur: this one is black, while the grey bear nearby is Matriarch Bristlefur, a different rare. Two camps: in the south-eastern corner of the forest just below Ridgepoint Tower, where the tower guards lend a hand but other players often get there first, and the quieter hills above Stone Cairn Lake. With 800-odd health it outlasts Hogger, so bring a friend at low level.

Summoned, not spawned: see the amulet below. Plan on a 2,400-health caster whose frostbolts hit for over 100. Bring a group; a feral druid has soloed it at 20, but that is the exception. Loot the Clouded Water Globe from him for the follow-up quest.

Using the loot

• Twenty of these make one Mathystral Amulet.

• Take it down the steps to the waterline in the Mathystral Ruins; activating it beside the Fathom Stone calls the baron and consumes the amulet.
