Guide
Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP, and Hardcore after launch: who you can group with, how battlegrounds mix, what follows you across rulesets and which one fits how you play.

Forever has no realm list. Instead, every character belongs to a ruleset, picked on the character screen before you create it. The ruleset decides who you can group with, whether other players can attack you in the open world and how strict the naming and behaviour rules are. It's the first decision you make in Forever, and the only one you can't take back.
The standard game. You fight other players only when you choose to: in battlegrounds, duels, or by flagging yourself for PvP. You can play both factions on your account. If you aren't sure, this is the one.
Contested zones are dangerous: players of the other faction can attack you there whenever they like, from your first trip out of the starting area to the last quest hub at 60. Expect to lose a few corpse runs, and to win a few fights you never planned.
The PvP ruleset adds a faction lock: each account plays one faction on it. Your first character there decides which, so an Alliance character means no Horde characters on PvP, and the reverse. Character creation for one faction can also be paused for a while when the population tips too far its way.
The Normal rules, plus a community that stays in character. Names and behaviour are held to stricter rules, so leave joke names and loud out-of-character chat for Normal. Both factions are allowed.
Roleplay's stricter naming and conduct rules on top of PvP's open-world combat, faction lock included. It's the ruleset for players who want their character's war to be a real one.
Hardcore opens after launch. Death carries lasting consequences: a Hardcore character that dies doesn't come back on Hardcore. It can move to another ruleset, PvP included, and keep playing there.
Hardcore sits apart from the rest of the game in three ways:
The rule is short: same ruleset, same faction. Everything social in Forever follows it, with one exception.
| Activity | Who can join |
|---|---|
| Party and open-world grouping | Players on your ruleset and your faction. |
| Dungeons | Players on your ruleset and your faction. |
| Raids | Players on your ruleset and your faction. |
| Guilds | Players on your ruleset and your faction. |
| Battlegrounds | Players from every ruleset, except Hardcore. |
There is no cross-ruleset grouping, so a friend on Normal and a friend on PvP can never run a dungeon together. Agree on a ruleset with your group, your guild and your raid before anyone creates a character.
Because battlegrounds mix rulesets, you don't need the PvP ruleset to climb the honor ranks. Normal and Roleplay players earn Honor and Rank Points in the same battlegrounds, including the new 15-versus-15 Darkspear Islands from level 30 (see the Darkspear Islands guide).
A character lives on its ruleset for good. There is no button to move it, and no realm list to transfer between: if you want to play another ruleset, you create a new character there.
The single exception runs out of Hardcore. A Hardcore character that dies may move to another ruleset and carry on.
Your new character still benefits from your account: Legacy Points and collections follow you everywhere.
| Progress | Shared across rulesets? |
|---|---|
| Legacy Points | Yes. The pool is account-wide, and every character spends up to 16 of them. |
| Collections | Yes. Account-wide on every ruleset. |
| Hardcore progress | Flows out to your other rulesets; nothing flows in. |
| Characters, gold and items | No. They stay with the character, on its ruleset. |
| Guild | No. A guild belongs to one ruleset and one faction. |
| PvP faction | Locked for your account on a PvP ruleset by your first character there. |
The Legacy guide explains how points are earned and the best ways to spend your 16, and the fastest 16 points shows the quickest route there.
| If you… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Are new, returning or not sure | Normal. No surprises, both factions, and you can still PvP in battlegrounds. |
| Want to play both factions | Normal or Roleplay. The PvP rulesets lock you to one. |
| Play at odd hours or level alone | Normal. Nobody can stop your questing. |
| Want world PvP, raids on towns and rivalries | PvP. |
| Only want honor ranks and PvP gear | Normal. Battlegrounds mix rulesets, so ranks are open to you anyway. |
| Want to roleplay in a calm world | Roleplay. |
| Want roleplay with open-world war | Roleplay-PvP. |
| Want permadeath | Wait for Hardcore, and level a Normal character in the meantime. Its Legacy Points won't help on Hardcore, but Hardcore will help it. |
| Are joining friends or a guild | Whatever they picked. You can't group across rulesets. |
Ask your friends which ruleset and, for PvP, which faction they chose before you make your first character. On PvP rulesets that first character sets your faction for the whole account.
After you press Create, look at the ruleset name above your character list. If the character landed on another ruleset, delete it before you play and create it again: there is no moving it later.
The launch checklist covers everything else for launch night: server times by region, the Classic or Enhanced preset, names, Invite-A-Friend codes and your first hour.
