Overview

Onyxia's Lair is the 40-player raid of WoW Forever's first raid night. It opens on December 9, 2026, together with Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, and like them it resets once a week.

The lair holds one boss: Onyxia, brood mother of the Black Dragonflight, who has spent years in Stormwind's court disguised as Lady Katrana Prestor. Her fight comes in three phases, and nearly everything she does deals fire damage.

Forty players is the largest group the game asks for. You need the numbers, a raid leader who calls the phases, and every one of those forty carrying the Drakefire Amulet.

Attunement: the Drakefire Amulet

Nobody enters the lair without the Drakefire Amulet. Each faction earns it through a long quest chain that runs through Blackrock Depths and both halves of Blackrock Spire and ends with General Drakkisath's blood.

You only need the amulet in your bags: there's no need to wear it. It does carry 15 fire resistance, so a raider short on fire resistance can put it on for this fight.

Every step of both chains is in our Drakefire Amulet attunement guide. Start it early: the chain takes several dungeon runs and a few elite quests, and the whole raid has to finish it before December 9.

Getting there

The lair is a cave in the Wyrmbog, the dragon-infested swamp in the south of Dustwallow Marsh. Alliance raiders come down from Theramore, Horde raiders from Brackenwall Village. Dustwallow is contested ground, so gather at the cave mouth rather than in the open swamp.

Get ready for December 9

  1. Step 1: Reach 60 and get attuned

Onyxia is a level 60 raid. Get to 60, respec into your level 60 build from our class guides, then work through the Drakefire Amulet chain. The chain already takes you through the dungeons you'll gear up in, so the two goals go hand in hand.

  2. Step 2: Gear up in the endgame dungeons

Work through the endgame dungeons in level order:

    Dungeons in order
    RungDungeonLevelPlayers
    1Blackrock Depths52–605
    2Dire Maul54–605
    3Lower Blackrock Spire55–6010
    4Scholomance58–605
    Stratholme58–605
    5Blackmaw Hold55–605
    Shaper's Terrace58–605
    6Upper Blackrock Spire59–6010

Upper Blackrock Spire is where both chains end, so plan a few runs of it with raiders who still need their amulet.

  3. Step 3: Collect fire resistance

Everything in this fight burns. Tanks want fire resistance most, since they take Flame Breath on every cast, but every raider gains from some. Pick up fire resistance pieces as you go, and bring Greater Fire Protection Potion for the second phase.

Paladins and Shamans cover their groups: one with Fire Resistance Aura, the other with a Fire Resistance Totem, which reaches the whole raid in Forever.

  4. Step 4: Fill forty slots

Plan for two or three tanks, around ten healers and the rest damage dealers, with a good share of them ranged: the second phase is a ranged fight. Bring a couple of backups on top, so one absence doesn't cancel the night.

Phase one (100% to 65%). Onyxia fights on the ground. The tank turns her to face the back wall, away from the raid, and everyone else stands at her sides. Stay off both ends of the dragon: her Flame Breath scorches everything in front of her, and Tail Sweep throws anyone behind her across the room. Wing Buffet knocks the tank back, so healers keep the tank in range when it lands.

Phase two (65% to 40%). She takes to the air and circles the lair. From above she hurls Fireballs at random raiders, so spread out. Every so often she flies to one side and unleashes Deep Breath, a sheet of fire across the whole room: watch where she turns and get out of its path, because it can kill a raider outright. Meanwhile Onyxian Whelps pour out of the side caves in waves. Ranged damage dealers keep hitting Onyxia; tanks and melee gather the whelps and cut them down.

Phase three (below 40%). Onyxia lands for the rest of the fight. She keeps the abilities of phase one and adds Bellowing Roar, a fear on the whole raid, and the floor cracks open and spews fire under feared players. Fear Ward, Tremor Totem and Berserker Rage keep key players in control. Give the tank a few seconds to pick her up when she lands, then finish her.

  • Tank

Face her to the back wall and keep her there. Fire resistance on the main tank makes the fight far smoother. In phase two, pick up the whelps; in phase three, take her back the moment she lands.
  • Healer

Flame Breath hits the tank hard and often, so give the tank healers no other job in phases one and three. Keep the raid topped up in phase two: a Fireball plus a grazing Deep Breath kills anyone left low.
  • Damage

Never stand at her head or tail. In phase two, ranged burn Onyxia while melee clear whelps. Hold your damage for a few seconds after she lands.

Loot

Onyxia drops the Head of Onyxia for Alliance raiders and the Head of Onyxia for the Horde. Its quest, Victory for the Alliance or Victory for the Horde, takes the trophy back to your capital, to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind or Thrall in Orgrimmar.

Leatherworkers will want her Scale of Onyxia as well.

Tips

  • Tip

Confirm that all forty raiders have the Drakefire Amulet in their bags the week before raid night, not at the door.

  • Tip

Assign whelp duty before the pull: name the tanks and melee who go to each side cave.

  • Tip

In phase two, watch Onyxia rather than your health bars: when she flies to one end of the lair and turns to face the room, Deep Breath is coming.

  • Tip

Defeating Onyxia earns a Legacy Point for your account.
