Overview

Upper Blackrock Spire is the top of the citadel, and the black dragonflight rules it. Warchief Rend Blackhand waits above his arena, and General Drakkisath commands the dragonspawn from his throne room behind the Halls of Ascension.

It's a 10-player run, and General Drakkisath alone drops the chest piece of every Dungeon Set. Add Rend's weapons and a full quest log, and you'll run it more than once.

New in Forever

The Dungeon Set pieces here, such as Breastplate of Valor and Magister's Robes, carry Forever's reworked set bonuses: a new bonus at every step from two pieces to six, starting with +8 to all resistances.

Getting there

Upper Blackrock Spire shares its portal with Lower Blackrock Spire, at the top of Blackrock Mountain between the Searing Gorge and the Burning Steppes. Inside the mountain, take the path up: the way down leads to Blackrock Depths.

Past the portal, a sealed gate near the start of the instance leads up into Upper Blackrock Spire.

The Seal of Ascension

The gate opens only for a player carrying the Seal of Ascension, and one key holder opens it for the whole group. Two quests lead to it:

  1. The first Seal of Ascension quest: bring the Gemstone of Spirestone, Gemstone of Smolderthorn and Gemstone of Bloodaxe to Vaelan with the Unadorned Seal of Ascension. Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone and Overlord Wyrmthalak drop the gemstones in Lower Blackrock Spire.
  2. The second Seal of Ascension quest: beat the ancient drake Emberstrife in the Wyrmbog, Dustwallow Marsh, until his will breaks. Place the Unforged Seal of Ascension before him, then use the Orb of Draconic Energy to take control of him and force his flames onto the seal. The quest asks for the Forged Seal of Ascension.

Quests

The biggest quests here end in General Drakkisath's throne room, and the rest spread across the spire, so plan on a full clear. Pick them up before you come in.

Drakkisath

Rend and the Rookery

Everything else

Bosses

Emberseer starts the fight as a prisoner, held in place by Blackhand Incarcerators. Three players click the Blackrock Altar in his room together to start the event, and the Incarcerators come for you. Kill every one: once they're down, Emberseer grows to full strength and breaks free.

He's a fire elemental, and his Fire Nova burns everyone near him. Fire resistance gear pays off here, and ranged players take far less damage than the melee.

Tank

Gather the Incarcerators as the event starts, then pick up Emberseer the moment he's free and hold him in place.

Healer

Fire Nova hits every melee player, not just the tank. Heal the whole melee group.

Damage

Burn the Incarcerators first. Once Emberseer is loose, ranged stay back out of Fire Nova.

Warchief Rend Blackhand

Level 62Boss

Rend's fight is an arena event. Step into the arena and waves of Chromatic Whelps, Chromatic Dragonspawn and Blackhand Dragon Handlers pour in. Clear each wave before the next one lands.

After the last wave, Rend rides in on his drake, Gyth. Bring Gyth down and Rend fights you on foot. His head completes For The Horde!, and his epic drop is Felstriker, a dagger.

Tank

Gather the dragonspawn and handlers from each wave and leave the whelps to area damage. When Gyth lands, turn him away from the group.

Healer

Pace your mana through the waves: Gyth and Rend still come after them.

Damage

Area damage on the whelps, single-target on everything else. Save your cooldowns for Gyth and Rend.

The Beast

Level 62BossShow on map: The Beast

The Beast has two tricks that scatter a group: a roar that sends nearby players fleeing in fear, and Flamebreak, which burns everyone near it and knocks them back. Clear every pack between you and The Beast before the pull. A feared player runs straight into anything you left alive.

Tank it with your back to a wall so the knockback can't throw you out of position, and use every fear break and fear immunity your group has.

Tank

Back to a wall, and keep The Beast still: every knockback and fear costs you position.

Healer

Stay out of its reach. The roar and Flamebreak only hit players near it.

Damage

Ranged keep their distance and carry the damage while the melee recover from each fear.

General Drakkisath

Level 62BossFinal bossShow on map: General Drakkisath

Drakkisath holds his throne room with two Chromatic Elite Guards beside him. Your main tank takes Drakkisath, a second tank pulls the guards away, and the group kills the guards first.

His Conflagration sets a player on fire and sends them running in panic, and the flames scorch every ally near them. Keep your distance from anyone burning. When it lands on the main tank, the second tank holds Drakkisath until the flames fade.

After the kill, anyone on Blackhand's Command finds Drakkisath's Brand to gain the Mark of Drakkisath, and his blood completes Drakefire Amulet and Blood of the Black Dragon Champion. His epic drop is Blackblade of Shahram, a two-handed sword.

Tank

Main tank on Drakkisath, off-tank on the guards away from him. If Conflagration panics the main tank, the off-tank takes the general.

Healer

Spread out and stay clear of burning players: Conflagration splashes onto allies.

Damage

Kill the Chromatic Elite Guards first, then Drakkisath. Step away from anyone on fire.

Lord Valthalak

Valthalak only appears when a player on Mea Culpa, Lord Valthalak uses the Brazier of Beckoning in The Beast's chamber, so kill The Beast first. Partway through the fight he summons Spectral Assassins: pick them up and kill them.

After he dies, use Lord Valthalak's Amulet on his corpse, then return it to the Spirit of Lord Valthalak.

Trash and pulls

  • The first halls mix Blackhand orcs with Rage Talon dragonspawn. Blackhand Summoners and Blackhand Dreadweavers are the casters: crowd-control or kill them first.
  • The Rookery is covered in eggs, and disturbed eggs hatch Rookery Whelps. Keep the group tight on the path and kill any whelps that hatch with area damage.
  • Before The Beast, clear the whole corridor. A feared player who runs into a live pack brings it along.
  • The Halls of Ascension hold Rage Talon dragonspawn in heavy packs. Pull one pack at a time and never fight next to the next one.

Loot

General Drakkisath is the reason most groups come back, but every boss here drops something worth the run:

Tips

  • Check for a Seal of Ascension before you zone in. Without a key holder, the gate stays shut.
  • Emberseer's event takes three players at the Blackrock Altar: decide who clicks before you walk in.
  • Bring fire resistance: Emberseer, The Beast and Drakkisath all deal fire damage.
  • Bring two tanks. Rend's waves and Drakkisath's guards both need a second one.
  • Pick up Tinkee Steamboil's egg quests before the run: Egg Freezing happens in the Rookery, on your way through.
  • Anyone on Blackhand's Command visits Drakkisath's Brand before leaving the throne room.
