Overview

Dire Maul is Eldre'Thalas, the ruined night elf city in Feralas, and it's three dungeons in one. The East wing, the Warpwood Quarter, belongs to satyrs and corrupted treants. The West wing hides the Shen'dralar, the city's last Highborne, and the demon their prince keeps locked in the Prison of Immol'thar. The North wing is the Gordok ogres' stronghold.

Each wing is its own 5-player run. The draws: rare gear for nearly every slot, the book and Libram quests in the West wing's library, the Athenaeum, and the tribute run in the North.

Start with East. Its first boss drops the Crescent Key, which opens locked doors in the other two wings.

Getting there

Dire Maul lies in Feralas, and each of its three wings has its own entrance in the ruins.

Horde players stage at Camp Mojache and the Alliance at Feathermoon Stronghold. Both hubs hand out Dire Maul quests, and Camp Mojache and Feathermoon Stronghold point you to the right quest giver.

The Crescent Key

Pusillin, the East wing's first boss, drops the Crescent Key. It opens locked doors in the West and North wings, and it isn't used up: one key holder opens them for the whole group on every run. A rogue with 300 Lockpicking opens the same doors. Run East first, or bring someone who already has the key. The North wing's two Gordok doors take their own single-use keys: see the tribute run below.

Quests

Dire Maul's quests split by wing. Pick up the Feralas ones before you go: many of the rest turn in at the Athenaeum, inside the West wing.

East wing

West wing

  • The Madness Within: kill the guardians around the five Pylons that power the Prison of Immol'thar, destroy Immol'thar, then confront Prince Tortheldrin in the Athenaeum. Report to the Shen'dralar Ancient in the courtyard. The Treasure of the Shen'dralar (first, repeat) then sends you back to the Athenaeum to claim your reward.
  • Elven Legends (Alliance, Horde): search Dire Maul for Kariel Winthalus, then report to Scholar Runethorn at Feathermoon or Sage Korolusk at Camp Mojache.
  • Libram of Focus, Libram of Protection and Libram of Rapidity: bring the Libram, a Pristine Black Diamond, Large Brilliant Shards and one extra reagent to Lorekeeper Lydros for an Arcanum.
  • The class books, from Codex of Defense to The Light and How To Swing It, and the three volumes of Enchanted Thorium Platemail all ask the same thing: return the book to its rightful owners. Foror's Compendium goes back to the Athenaeum too.
  • Falrin Treeshaper's chain: Anthion's Old Friend brings him the incomplete Banner of Provocation, Falrin's Vendetta wants 25 Ogre Warbeads from ogres in Dire Maul or Blackrock Spire, and The Instigator's Enchantment wants a Jeering Spectre's Essence, 4 Dark Runes and 8 Large Brilliant Shards.
  • Ancient Equine Spirit (Alliance): slay Tendris Warpwood to free the Ancient Equine Spirit, feed it the horse feed from Merideth Carlson in Southshore, and give it the Arcanite Barding to bless. Blessed Arcanite Barding takes the Blessed Arcanite Barding to Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker in Stormwind.
  • Dreadsteed of Xoroth: read Mor'zul's Instructions, summon a Xorothian Dreadsteed, defeat it and bind its spirit to you.

North wing

  • Free Knot! (first, repeat): bring a Gordok Shackle Key to free Knot Thimblejack. Guard Mol'dar, Guard Fengus and Guard Slip'kik drop it.
  • The Gordok Ogre Suit: 4 Bolts of Runecloth, 8 Rugged Leather, 2 Rune Threads and Ogre Tannin for Knot, who's chained inside the Gordok wing. The Gordok Ogre Suit gets you another suit for the same materials.
  • A Broken Trap: repair the broken trap with a Thorium Widget and Frost Oil, and it traps an ogre passing near it.
  • The Gordok Taste Test: once you're king, free samples of the good brews, which boost you.
  • Unfinished Gordok Business (first, repeat): find the Gauntlet of Gordok Might and return it to Captain Kromcrush. Prince Tortheldrin stole it from a Gordok king.

East wing

The Warpwood Quarter is overgrown with corrupted plants and held by the Wildspawn satyrs. Pusillin's chase opens it, and Alzzin the Wildshaper waits at the end.

Pusillin

Level 57EliteShow on map: Pusillin

Pusillin is an imp, and he runs. Talk to him and he flees deeper into the wing: catch up, talk again, and repeat until he turns and fights with Wildspawn Imps at his side.

He drops the Crescent Key for the West and North wings, and Azj'Tordin's Book of Incantations for Pusillin and the Elder Azj'Tordin.

Tank

Pick up the imps the moment he turns, before they reach your healer.

Healer

Stay with the group during the chase. Never run ahead into a pull.

Damage

Area damage clears the imps, then finish Pusillin.

Zevrim is the satyr lord of the Warpwood Quarter. Plate wearers watch his loot for the Helm of Awareness.

Hydrospawn

Level 57EliteShow on map: Hydrospawn

Hydrospawn is the water elemental of the Warpwood Quarter. Kill him for the Hydrospawn Essence on Arcane Refreshment and a shot at Ace of Elementals, a card for the Elementals deck.

Lethtendris

Level 57EliteShow on map: Lethtendris

Lethtendris fights with her imp, Pimgib, beside her: pick up both on the pull. Her web completes Lethtendris's Web for both factions.

Alzzin the Wildshaper

Level 58EliteFinal bossShow on map: Alzzin the Wildshaper

Alzzin ends the East wing, and his loot has the wing's highest item level, from Energized Chestplate to Shadewood Cloak. His chamber is also where the Brazier of Beckoning summons Isalien for the Lord Valthalak amulet quests.

West wing

The West wing belongs to the Shen'dralar. Prince Tortheldrin keeps Immol'thar locked in a prison powered by five Pylons, and the Shen'dralar library, the Athenaeum, takes many of Dire Maul's quest turn-ins.

Tendris is a giant corrupted treant. His Grasping Vines knocks down and roots everyone near him, so keep healers and ranged out of melee range and let the vines catch only the tank and the melee. Killing him frees the Ancient Equine Spirit for Ancient Equine Spirit.

Tank

Hold him in place. You'll spend part of the fight rooted anyway.

Healer

Stay out of melee range, where the vines can't reach you.

Damage

Ranged carry this fight. Melee get knocked down and rooted along with the tank.

Illyanna is an undead huntress, and she fights beside her bear, Ferra. She shoots from range and volleys the group, so spread out and never stack. Pick up Ferra on the pull and send the melee to Illyanna.

Tank

Take Ferra and hold the bear away from the group.

Healer

Stand apart from the other ranged players so one Volley can't hit you all.

Damage

Melee go straight to Illyanna. Ranged spread out.

Kalendris is a shadow caster: interrupt what you can and burn him fast. Tailors want his Pattern: Big Bag of Enchantment.

Tsu'zee

Tsu'zee is one of the West wing's undead elites and a rare spawn, so it isn't there every run. Its standout drop is Brightspark Gloves, cloth hands.

Immol'thar

Level 61EliteShow on map: Immol'thar

Immol'thar sits in the Prison of Immol'thar behind a force field. Five Pylons power the field, each guarded by Arcane Aberrations and Mana Remnants. Kill a Pylon's guardians and it powers down. With all five down, the field drops and you can reach him.

During the fight he summons Eyes of Immol'thar: kill them as they appear. His death is half of The Madness Within, and Prince Tortheldrin is the other half.

Tank

Treat each Pylon as a normal pull, then hold Immol'thar still while the group handles the Eyes.

Healer

The Pylon pulls are long: drink between them.

Damage

Switch to the Eyes when they appear, then back to Immol'thar.

Prince Tortheldrin

Level 60EliteFinal bossShow on map: Prince Tortheldrin

The Shen'dralar prince waits in the Athenaeum. Killing him finishes The Madness Within, and he's the thief behind Unfinished Gordok Business: he stole the Gauntlet of Gordok Might from a Gordok king. His standout drop is Mind Carver, a main-hand sword.

Lord Hel'nurath

Lord Hel'nurath isn't part of a normal clear: he only appears when summoned. He's a demon lord and the highest-level boss in the West wing, and his standout drop is Dreadguard's Protector, a shield.

North wing

The North wing is the Gordok ogres' stronghold, and King Gordok rules it with Cho'Rush the Observer at his side.

The tribute run

When King Gordok dies, Mizzle the Crafty appears and crowns you with King of the Gordok. The king also leaves the Gordok Tribute, and every guard you left alive makes it richer. A tribute run kills only the king, so plan how you pass each locked door and each guard.

The Crescent Key opens the wing's Crescent doors every time, because it isn't used up, and a rogue with 300 Lockpicking opens them too. The two Gordok doors are different: each key opens its door once and is used up. In the order you reach them:

  • Gordok Courtyard Door, right past Guard Fengus: only the Gordok Courtyard Key opens it, and it comes from Fengus's Chest beside him. Keeping Fengus alive takes an unused Courtyard Key saved from an earlier kill. Without one, you kill Fengus and give up his share of the tribute.
  • Gordok Inner Door: a rogue with 200 Lockpicking opens it, so Guard Mol'dar can live. An unused Gordok Inner Door Key from an earlier Mol'dar kill works too.
  • Guard Slip'kik: a trap repaired through A Broken Trap holds him while you walk past.
  • Captain Kromcrush: the Gordok Ogre Suit fools him.

Two guards are worth keeping alive even on a normal clear: Stomper Kreeg offers The Gordok Taste Test once you're king, and Captain Kromcrush takes the Gauntlet of Gordok Might for Unfinished Gordok Business.

Guard Mol'dar

Level 59EliteShow on map: Guard Mol'dar

Mol'dar is the first of King Gordok's guards, and he drops the Gordok Inner Door Key, which opens the Gordok Inner Door once. On a tribute run, leave him alive and have a rogue pick the door instead. On a normal clear, kill him: he's also one of the three guards who drop the Gordok Shackle Key.

Stomper Kreeg

Level 59EliteShow on map: Stomper Kreeg

Kreeg is the Gordok's drunk, and he's worth more alive. Once you're king, he offers The Gordok Taste Test, free samples of his better brews.

Guard Fengus

Level 59EliteShow on map: Guard Fengus

Another of the king's guards. The Gordok Courtyard Key waits in Fengus's Chest beside him. The key opens the Gordok Courtyard Door once and is used up, so Fengus only survives a tribute run if someone saved an unused key from an earlier kill. On a normal clear, kill him for the key and a shot at the Gordok Shackle Key.

Guard Slip'kik

Level 59EliteShow on map: Guard Slip'kik

Slip'kik is the guard the broken trap is for. Repair it with a Thorium Widget and Frost Oil through A Broken Trap, and it holds him in place while you walk past.

Kromcrush is the captain the Gordok Ogre Suit is made to fool: wear it on a tribute run to get past him. Keep him alive, because he also takes the gauntlet back for Unfinished Gordok Business.

Cho'Rush stands beside King Gordok and fights with him as a priest, a shaman or a mage, picked at random. When the king dies, Cho'Rush stops fighting.

King Gordok

Level 62EliteFinal bossShow on map: King Gordok

Gordok and Cho'Rush come as a pair. Your main tank takes the king, a second tank holds Cho'Rush away from him, and the group kills Gordok first: once the king is dead, Cho'Rush stops fighting and Mizzle the Crafty arrives with your crown.

Tank

Main tank on Gordok. The off-tank drags Cho'Rush away and keeps him busy.

Healer

Two tanks take damage here: keep an eye on both.

Damage

Everything on Gordok, and interrupt Cho'Rush's casts.

Trash and pulls

  • East: Whip Lashers are non-elite and come in clusters, so area damage clears them. Save your crowd control for the Wildspawn satyrs, which are elite.
  • West: much of the wing is undead, from the Eldreth ghosts to the Highborne remains, so crowd control that works on undead earns its keep. The treants, the Pylon guardians and the Arcane Torrents are elementals.
  • North: Gordok Mastiffs and Carrion Swarmers are non-elite, so area damage handles them. Gordok Mage-Lords are the ogre casters to kill or crowd-control first.

Loot

Every wing has rare gear for most slots. The standouts by wing:

  • East: Energized Chestplate (plate chest) and Ring of Demonic Potency from Alzzin the Wildshaper, Waveslicer (two-handed axe) from Hydrospawn and Quel'dorai Channeling Rod (staff) from Lethtendris.
  • West: Robe of Everlasting Night (cloth robe) and Vigilance Charm (trinket) from Immol'thar; Mind Carver (sword), Eldritch Reinforced Legplates (plate legs) and Stoneshatter (crossbow) from Prince Tortheldrin; Mindtap Talisman (trinket) from Magister Kalendris; Dreadguard's Protector (shield) from Lord Hel'nurath.
  • North: Barbarous Blade (two-handed sword), Crown of the Ogre King (cloth helm) and Band of the Ogre King (ring) from King Gordok; Monstrous Glaive (polearm) and Kromcrush's Chestplate (plate chest) from Captain Kromcrush.
  • Professions: Pattern: Big Bag of Enchantment from Magister Kalendris, Recipe: Runn Tum Tuber Surprise from Pusillin and Top Half of Advanced Armorsmithing: Volume I from King Gordok.

Tips

  • Run the East wing first: Pusillin's Crescent Key opens locked doors in the West and North.
  • Chase Pusillin as a group. The fastest player alone in a satyr pack is a dead player.
  • Clear all five Pylons before you head for Immol'thar: the force field stays up until the last one powers down.
  • On a tribute run, bring a rogue for the Gordok Inner Door, an unused Gordok Courtyard Key if Fengus is to live, a Gordok Ogre Suit and a repaired trap.
  • Want Unfinished Gordok Business or The Gordok Taste Test? Leave Captain Kromcrush and Stomper Kreeg alive.
  • Turn in Librams at the Athenaeum while you're in the West wing.
