Overview

Blackrock Depths is Shadowforge City, the Dark Iron dwarves' capital under Blackrock Mountain. It has more bosses, more loot and more quests than any other dungeon, spread across a prison, an arena, a treasure vault, forges, a tavern and the throne room where Emperor Dagran Thaurissan holds Princess Moira Bronzebeard.

You can zone in well before the recommended level, but the bosses climb in level the deeper you go. Lord Roccor and the prison bosses are the lowest-level fights here, and the Emperor is the highest.

Split it into runs

A full clear is a long night. Give each run a goal and bring the quests that match it:

  • Prison and arena: Lord Roccor, High Interrogator Gerstahn, Houndmaster Grebmar and the Ring of Law, with the prison chains.
  • Vault and forges: Pyromancer Loregrain, the Vault, Warder Stilgiss, Fineous Darkvire, Lord Incendius, Bael'Gar, General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach, with the kill quests and the Shadowforge Key.
  • Tavern and throne: the Grim Guzzler, Ambassador Flamelash, the Seven, Magmus, Moira and the Emperor, where both rescue chains end.

Getting there

Blackrock Mountain sits between Searing Gorge and the Burning Steppes, with an entrance from each zone. Inside the mountain, take the walkways down: the Blackrock Depths portal is at the bottom, and Blackrock Spire's entrance is higher up.

Quests

Blackrock Depths has more quests than any other dungeon, and most of its chains start or finish outside: in Orgrimmar and Kargath for the Horde, in Ironforge and Kharanos for the Alliance, and in the Burning Steppes for everyone. Pick up what your faction offers before you travel, and carry the long chains across several runs.

The Shadowforge Key

Dark Iron Legacy is the key quest, for both factions: Franclorn Forgewright offers a key to the city. The second step sends you to kill Fineous Darkvire for the great hammer Ironfel and set it on Franclorn's statue at the Shrine of Thaurissan.

The reward is the Shadowforge Key, the Master Key to the Depths. It opens the city's locked gates, including the Shadowforge Lock, so finish the chain on your first run.

Prison and rescue chains

The prisoners these chains send you to sit in the cells of the Detention Block. High Interrogator Gerstahn's Prison Cell Key opens them, so kill her early.

Horde:

Alliance:

Marshal Windsor (Alliance):

  • Marshal Windsor: find out what became of Marshal Windsor, dragged off to a prison.
  • Abandoned Hope: give Marshal Maxwell the bad news.
  • A Crumpled Up Note starts from A Crumpled Up Note, an item you pick up in the Depths.
  • A Shred of Hope: recover Marshal Windsor's Lost Information. General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach each hold a piece.
  • Jail Break!: help Windsor get his gear back and free his friends, then report to Marshal Maxwell.

The two rescue chains run all the way to the Emperor, so they're the ones to carry from your first run to your last.

Kill quests

These line up with bosses you kill anyway:

Collection quests

  • The Good Stuff (Alliance): 20 Dark Iron Fanny Packs for Oralius, from the Dark Iron dwarves.
  • The Last Element (Horde): 10 Essence of the Elements from the golems, the golem makers and the elementals.
  • The Love Potion: 4 Gromsblood, 10 Giant Silver Veins and Nagmara's Filled Vial for Mistress Nagmara, inside the Depths.
  • The Spectral Chalice: the Spectral Chalice asks for 2 Star Rubies, 20 Gold Bars and 10 Truesilver Bars.

Level 60 and outside the Depths

  • The Challenge belongs to the chain for Lord Valthalak's amulet. Plant the Banner of Provocation in the Ring of Law as High Justice Grimstone sentences you, beat Theldren and his gladiators, and take the first piece of the amulet to Anthion Harmon in the Eastern Plaguelands.
  • Anthion's Parting Words and its fourteen versions for other classes and factions are one step: bring the boots, legs and shoulders of your dungeon set to Deliana in Ironforge or Mokvar in Orgrimmar.
  • Favor Amongst the Brotherhood, Dark Iron Ore and Favor Amongst the Brotherhood, Blood of the Mountain are the two favor quests a Depths run feeds, for standing with the Thorium Brotherhood. Dark Iron Ore goes in ten at a time and Blood of the Mountain one at a time. Dark Iron Deposits yield both, and the Blood, a rare find, also drops from a handful of the Depths' creatures. The other three favor quests want materials from elsewhere.
  • A Binding Contract takes a Thorium Brotherhood Contract and a Sulfuron Ingot to Lokhtos Darkbargainer for the plans for Sulfuron.
  • Grark Lorkrub and Precarious Predicament (Horde) happen outside the Depths: find Grark Lorkrub in a Blackrock fortress in the Burning Steppes and escort him through Blackrock Mountain to Searing Gorge.

Detention Block and Ring of Law

The first stretch of the city: the prison where the quest chains begin, and the arena.

Lord Roccor

Level 51RareShow on map: Lord Roccor

Lord Roccor is a rare elemental and the lowest-level boss in the Depths. Don't skip him: his loot includes the Formula: Smoking Heart of the Mountain, an Enchanting recipe, and Stoneshell Guard, a shield with Strength and Stamina.

High Interrogator Gerstahn runs the Detention Block for the Twilight's Hammer. Her loot includes the Prison Cell Key, which opens the prison cells, and the prisoners you need are behind those doors: Commander Gor'shak for the Horde, Marshal Windsor for the Alliance and Kharan Mighthammer for both. Kill her before you go cell to cell.

A rogue with 250 Lockpicking opens the same cells without the key.

Houndmaster Grebmar is the hunters' stop. He drops the Houndmaster's Bow, the Houndmaster's Rifle, and Fleetfoot Greaves, mail boots with Agility. Casters get a shot at Spritecaster Cape.

The Ring of Law

Walk into the arena and High Justice Grimstone sentences your group to fight. Arena beasts come through the gates first, then one of six champions picked at random: Anub'shiah, Eviscerator, Gorosh the Dervish, Grizzle, Hedrum the Creeper or Ok'thor the Breaker. Kill the champion to finish the event.

Each champion has his own loot table, so what drops depends on who came out. The prize is Savage Gladiator Chain, an epic mail chest from the Savage Gladiator set, and the set's other pieces drop here too. Weaponsmiths want Plans: Dark Iron Pulverizer.

With the Banner of Provocation from The Challenge, Grimstone's sentence brings out Theldren and his gladiators, a level-60 team.

  • Tank: Gather each group of beasts as it comes in, then turn to the champion.
  • Healer: Stand where you can see the whole ring and every gate.
  • Damage: Kill the beasts first, then the champion. Check who came out before you spend cooldowns.

The Vault and the Manufactory

The middle of the city: the Shrine of Thaurissan, the Black Vault, the forges and the golem works.

Pyromancer Loregrain

Pyromancer Loregrain is a rare caster who stands at the Shrine of Thaurissan, beside Franclorn Forgewright's statue. Enchanters come for his Formula: Enchant Weapon - Fiery Weapon, and casters for Kindling Stave, a staff with Spirit, Stamina, Intellect and a spell critical strike bonus.

Warder Stilgiss guards the Black Vault with Verek at his side. Clear them both before you touch the coffers. Leather wearers want his Dark Warder's Pauldrons, shoulders with Agility and Strength.

Watchman Doomgrip

Level 55Show on map: Watchman Doomgrip

The Black Vault is a treasure event. Twelve Relic Coffers sit behind locked doors, and each door takes a Relic Coffer Key. Open all twelve and Watchman Doomgrip attacks with his Warbringer Constructs. Kill Doomgrip and the vault's secret door opens on the Secret Safe and the Heart of the Mountain, the item Maxwort Uberglint's quest asks for.

A Dark Keeper Key opens the Dark Coffer, which sits beside the safe. Doomgrip's own drops are on this card; the coffers and the safe are in the loot table.

Tank

Clear Warder Stilgiss first, then get in position before you open the twelfth door: Doomgrip and his golems come the moment it opens.

Healer

Drink before the last coffer. The golem fight starts right away.

Damage

Focus one target at a time, and Banish a construct if your group has a warlock: golems are elementals.

Fineous Darkvire, the Chief Architect, carries the great hammer Ironfel for Dark Iron Legacy. Healers want his Senior Designer's Pantaloons, cloth legs with a big healing bonus.

Lord Incendius

Level 55EliteShow on map: Lord Incendius

Lord Incendius, a fire elemental lord, stands on the Black Anvil. Two quests want him dead: Incendius! for the Alliance and Disharmony of Fire for the Horde. The Tablet of Kurniya that the Horde quest asks for drops from him, and Horde players on The Last Element can loot Essence of the Elements from him too.

His table has bracers for every armor type and the Ace of Elementals, the first card of the Elementals set. Clear the Black Anvil's surroundings before you pull him, so the fight stays one on one.

Bael'Gar

Level 54EliteShow on map: Bael'Gar

Bael'Gar is a giant, and he doesn't fight alone for long. Through the fight he summons Spawns of Bael'Gar, and each summoning burns everyone in the area where they land. Spread out so one summoning never hits the whole group, and kill the spawns as they arrive.

For A Taste of Flame, use the Altered Black Dragonflight Molt on his remains once he's dead to capture his fiery essence.

Tank

Pick up each Spawn of Bael'Gar the moment it lands.

Healer

Stand apart from the group so a summoning never catches you with everyone else.

Damage

Kill the spawns fast, then go back to Bael'Gar.

General Angerforge commands the Anvilrage garrison, so clear the dwarves around him before the pull. Near the end of the fight he calls in Anvilrage Reservists and Anvilrage Medics: save your cooldowns for that moment, and kill the Medics before they heal him.

He holds one piece of Marshal Windsor's Lost Information for A Shred of Hope, and the Horde's Operation: Death to Angerforge wants him dead. Melee want Lord General's Sword, and leather tanks want Warstrife Leggings.

Tank

Keep your threat tools ready for the reinforcements, and pick them up as they arrive.

Healer

The fight turns when the reinforcements arrive. Keep your mana for the last stretch.

Damage

When the Medics show up, kill them first, then finish the General.

Golem Lord Argelmach works among his golems, and Ragereaver Golems and Warbringer Constructs protect him. Clear them before you pull him, and Banish one if you have a warlock.

He carries the other piece of Marshal Windsor's Lost Information for A Shred of Hope, and his own head for The Rise of the Machines. The Rise of the Machines also wants ten Intact Elemental Cores, and every golem around him can drop one. Casters want Omnicast Boots and Luminary Kilt, and Naglering and Second Wind drop here too.

Tank

Pull the golems around him one at a time before you touch Argelmach.

Healer

Stand back from each golem pull and keep the tank topped up through the melee.

Damage

On The Rise of the Machines, kill every golem around him: the cores come from them.

Grim Guzzler and the Imperial Seat

The far end of the city: the Grim Guzzler tavern, then the road to the throne through Ambassador Flamelash, the Seven, the Lyceum and Magmus.

Hurley Blackbreath

Break the three Thunderbrew Lager Kegs in the Grim Guzzler and Hurley Blackbreath comes out with his Blackbreath Cronies. He carries the Lost Thunderbrew Recipe that Hurley Blackbreath for the Alliance and Lost Thunderbrew Recipe for the Horde both want.

Leather-wearing melee want his Ragefury Eyepatch, a helm with Critical Strike.

Ribbly Screwspigot

Ribbly Screwspigot sits in the Grim Guzzler with his cronies, and they fight beside him. Ribbly Screwspigot wants his head for Yuka Screwspigot. Armorsmiths come for his Plans: Dark Iron Plate, and hunters for Ribbly's Quiver and Ribbly's Bandolier.

Plugger Spazzring

Plugger Spazzring tends bar at the Grim Guzzler, and his shop is worth a visit before any fight breaks out there. He sells Dark Iron Ale Mugs, the Recipe: Transmute Fire to Earth and the Pattern: Black Dragonscale Breastplate, all in limited stock. Rogues can pickpocket the Grim Guzzler Key from him, which opens the bar's locked door.

Among his drops is the Schematic: Goblin Jumper Cables XL, for goblin engineers.

Loot (16)

Phalanx

Level 55EliteShow on map: Phalanx

Phalanx is the Grim Guzzler's golem, standing by the bar's door. Plate wearers want Fists of Phalanx, gloves with Strength, mail wearers Golem Fitted Pauldrons, and fist-weapon users get two chances: Bloodfist and Rockfist.

Ambassador Flamelash calls Burning Spirits to him during the fight, and each one that reaches him makes him hit harder. Kill every spirit before it gets there: they're weak, so one or two damage dealers on spirit duty is enough.

His loot includes Circle of Flame, an epic cloth helm, and Tablet of Flame Shock VI, which teaches shamans Flame Shock rank 6 at 60.

Tank

Hold him still so your damage dealers can see the spirits coming.

Healer

Every spirit that gets through means harder hits on the tank. Heal harder if the kill slips.

Damage

Assign one or two players to the Burning Spirits and keep everyone else on Flamelash.

The Seven

The ghosts of seven Dark Iron dwarves haunt the Summoners' Tomb: Anger'rel, Dope'rel, Gloom'rel, Hate'rel, Seeth'rel, Vile'rel and Doom'rel. Talk to Doom'rel to start the event. They come at you one after another, with Doom'rel last. Beat all seven and loot the Chest of The Seven.

  • Tank: Pick up each dwarf as it turns on you, and keep the fight in one spot.
  • Healer: It's seven fights in a row. Start at full mana.
  • Damage: Stay on the active dwarf and finish it before the next one joins.

Magmus

Level 57EliteShow on map: Magmus

The Lyceum comes first. Its Shadowforge Flame Keepers carry Shadowforge Torches: take them and light both Shadowforge Braziers to open the way to Magmus. A torch lasts five minutes, so light the braziers right away.

Magmus, a giant, guards the doors to the Imperial Seat, and they open when he dies. Tanks want his Golem Skull Helm, a plate helm with defense, and his table holds a relic each for paladins and shamans: Libram of Truth and Totem of Rage.

King Magni's daughter stands at the Emperor's side and heals him through the fight. What you do with her depends on your quests.

The Royal Rescue and The Fate of the Kingdom ask you to free her, not kill her, and once the Emperor falls she's the one who takes the turn-in. On a quest run, leave her alive and interrupt her heals: a dead Moira means no turn-in until the dungeon resets. On a loot run, kill her first. Her table has cloth gloves and boots, leather boots and plate shoulders.

The Emperor waits in the Imperial Seat with Moira. His Hand of Thaurissan burns and stuns a player, so keep everyone's health high. His death is what The Royal Rescue and The Fate of the Kingdom ask for.

He carries the highest-level loot in the Depths: Ironfoe, an epic mace, Hand of Justice, a trinket, and the Thaurissan Family Jewels, a junk item.

Tank

Face the Emperor away from the group, and settle your plan for Moira before the pull.

Healer

If Moira lives, the fight runs long. Pace your mana and watch for players stunned by Hand of Thaurissan.

Damage

On a quest run, interrupt Moira's heals and never hit her. On a loot run, kill her first.

Trash and pulls

  • Anvilrage Medics heal the dwarves around them. Kill or interrupt them first in every pack.
  • The Dark Iron dwarves are humanoids, so Sap and Polymorph work on them. The golems and fire elementals (Warbringer Constructs, Ragereaver Golems, Molten War Golems and the Fireguards) are elementals, and Banish works on those.
  • Pull caster packs around corners so they come to you instead of casting from range.
  • Several bosses stand with guards: Angerforge with his garrison, Argelmach with his golems and Stilgiss with Verek. Clear around each one before you pull.

Loot

Blackrock Depths has the biggest loot table of any dungeon, and every role leaves with something. The standouts:

Tips

  • Finish Dark Iron Legacy on your first run. The Shadowforge Key opens the city's locked gates for good.
  • A rogue with 250 Lockpicking opens the prison cells and the Shadowforge doors without keys.
  • Kill High Interrogator Gerstahn before anything else in the Detention Block: the prison chains need her key.
  • On a quest run, keep Princess Moira alive. On a loot run, kill her first.
  • Light both Shadowforge Braziers within five minutes of looting the torches.
  • Miners: Dark Iron Deposits need 230 Mining, and Smelt Dark Iron works only at the Black Forge inside the Depths.
