Overview

Blackfathom Deeps was a great temple of Elune until the corruption of an Old God seeped up from below and Aku'mai, its hydra servant, rose from the waters. Now the Twilight's Hammer cult, led by Twilight Lord Kelris, shares the drowned halls with naga, satyrs and murlocs.

It's a run for characters from level 24 to 32, and it's a wet one: deep pools, flooded halls and one boss you fight underwater. Both factions have a full slate of quests here, and every boss except Baron Aquanis, who drops a single green, drops blues.

Getting there

The entrance is in the ruined temple on the Zoram Strand, Ashenvale's western coast, north of Zoram'gar Outpost. The ruins sit half-sunk in the sea; follow them down to the instance portal.

Most Horde quests hand in at Zoram'gar Outpost, a short trip down the coast; Blackfathom Villainy goes to Thunder Bluff. Alliance quests hand in at Auberdine, Darnassus and Ironforge, except In Search of Thaelrid, which you finish inside the dungeon with Argent Guard Thaelrid.

Quests

Both factions have plenty to do, so pick up everything before you go in. Your faction's Blackfathom Villainy is the headline: Twilight Lord Kelris stands on your path anyway.

Bosses

Ghamoo-ra

Level 25EliteShow on map: Ghamoo-ra

Ghamoo-ra is a giant turtle and the first boss on the path. Clear the Aku'mai Fishers around him, then fight him on his own. His Trample hits everyone standing close to him. He drops Tortoise Armor, a mail chest with bonus armor for tanks.

Abilities

  • TrampleTank

    Hits everyone standing close.

Lady Sarevess

Level 25EliteShow on map: Lady Sarevess

Lady Sarevess is a naga, with Blackfathom Myrmidons and Blackfathom Sea Witches in the halls around her. Clear the naga near her before the pull, so she fights alone. Forked Lightning hits everything in a cone in front of her, so stay out of it, and Frost Nova and Slow keep the melee busy. She drops Naga Heartpiercer for Hunters and Darkwater Talwar, a main-hand sword with a Shadow proc.

Abilities

  • Forked LightningCan be interrupted

Nature damage in a cone in front of her (2-second cast). Stay out of the cone.

  • Frost NovaMagic effect

Freezes everyone near her in place for up to 8 seconds.

  • SlowMagic effect

Slows a player's movement and attacks for 10 seconds.

Gelihast

Level 26EliteShow on map: Gelihast

Gelihast rules the murloc caves, with Blindlight Oracles and Blindlight Muckdwellers crowded around him. Clear them in small pulls first, so he doesn't come with a crowd. He drops Algae Fists, mail gloves with Strength, and Murloc Skin Bag, a 10-slot bag anyone can use.

Abilities

  • Net

Roots a player in place for 10 seconds.

Lorgus Jett

Level 26EliteShow on map: Lorgus Jett

Lorgus Jett doesn't hold a fixed spot: he turns up at one of several places between the murloc caves and the Twilight's Hammer halls, so watch for him as you clear. He shields himself with Lightning Shield and casts Lightning Bolt from range, so interrupt the bolt. He drops three blues. Horde players need him dead for the second Allegiance to the Old Gods; Alliance groups can take him or leave him.

Abilities

  • Lightning ShieldMagic effect

Lightning strikes whoever hits him. A priest or a shaman can remove it.

  • Lightning BoltCan be interrupted

He keeps his distance to cast it. Interrupt it.

Baron Aquanis

Level 28

Click the Fathom Stone in the water: he rises from it.

No guide text for this fight yet. The abilities are from the game data.

Abilities

  • FrostboltCan be interruptedMagic effect

He keeps his distance to cast it: Frost damage and a slow.

  • Frost NovaMagic effect

Roots everyone near him for up to 8 seconds.

Kelris leads the Twilight's Hammer here, and he waits among four braziers in their halls. Clear everything around him, then pull. During the fight he puts players to sleep. His head completes Blackfathom Villainy for both factions, and he drops Rod of the Sleepwalker, a staff with a big spell power bonus.

After he dies, light the four braziers around him. Each one calls a wave of adds: clear the wave before you light the next brazier. When all four burn, the door to Aku'mai opens.

Tank

Clear his room before the pull so nothing joins him.

Healer

Keep a heal-over-time on the tank if you have one: it keeps working while you sleep.

Damage

Kelris first, braziers second. Never light one while he's alive.

Abilities

  • SleepMagic effectImportant

Puts everyone near him to sleep for up to 10 seconds. Damage wakes a sleeper.

  • Mind BlastCan be interrupted

Shadow damage on a player (1.5-second cast).

Old Serra'kis

Level 26EliteShow on map: Old Serra'kis

Old Serra'kis is a giant thresher that waits in an underwater cave below Twilight Lord Kelris's temple, where groups often miss him. Swim under the temple to reach him, and you fight him underwater. He's optional: take him for Glowing Thresher Cape or Bite of Serra'kis, but only with breath to spare.

Tank

Surface for a full breath right before the pull, not halfway through the fight.

Healer

Stay in range of the tank underwater and watch your own breath: you can't heal anyone once you drown.

Damage

Get Unending Breath or Water Breathing before you dive, then burn him down.

Aku'mai

Level 28EliteFinal bossShow on map: Aku'mai

Aku'mai, the three-headed hydra, waits in Aku'mai's Lair at the end of the tunnel behind the braziers' door, with Aku'mai Snapjaws guarding the way. Clear every turtle in the tunnel before you pull. Aku'mai is a level 28 elite, level with Baron Aquanis as the highest-level boss in the dungeon, so go in with full health and mana.

Aku'mai casts Poison Cloud on everyone nearby, a poison that keeps ticking after it lands: cure it where you can. Near the end of the fight it goes into Frenzied Rage and attacks much faster, and that's the stretch where the tank needs cooldowns and the healer needs mana.

It drops Strike of the Hydra, a two-handed sword whose proc burns, chills, slows and poisons the target at once.

Tank

Clear the Snapjaws in the tunnel first, and save your defensive cooldowns for Frenzied Rage.

Healer

If you can cure poison, clear Poison Cloud off the melee. Either way, keep mana back for the end.

Damage

Ranged, stay out of Poison Cloud's reach. Everyone, save your cooldowns and potions for the last stretch.

Abilities

  • Poison CloudHealersPoison

Nature damage every 5 seconds for 45 seconds to everyone nearby.

  • Frenzied RageTankEnrage

Below 30% health: bursts of attacks 75% faster, over and over.

Trash and pulls

  • The naga, the murlocs and the Twilight's Hammer are Humanoids: Sap and Polymorph hold them. The Fallenroot Hellcallers and the other satyrs are Demons, so neither works on them; Banish does, from level 28.
  • The crabs, turtles and Threshfins are Beasts: Hibernate and Polymorph handle them.
  • The Twilight's Hammer halls are caster-heavy: Aquamancers, Loreseekers, Shadowmages and Elementalists. Pull each pack around a corner so the casters come to you.
  • Damage breaks all of that crowd control, so keep AoE off controlled targets.

Tips

  • Bring breath. Warlocks have Unending Breath from 16 and Shamans have Water Breathing from 22 (it costs Shiny Fish Scales, so bring some), and Undead characters hold their breath far longer than anyone else.
  • Light Kelris's braziers one at a time and clear each wave before the next.
  • Lorgus Jett spawns in one of several places. Horde groups on Allegiance to the Old Gods should check every corner between the murloc caves and the Twilight's Hammer halls.
  • The satyrs are Demons: no Polymorph or Sap on them.
