Overview

Shadowfang Keep was the Silverlaine family's castle until Archmage Arugal summoned the worgen to fight the Scourge and lost control of them. Arugal made the keep his lair. His worgen fill its halls, and the keep's dead still walk them: Baron Silverlaine and Commander Springvale are both undead bosses now.

The keep's boss list runs to ten fights and ends with Arugal, and together they drop blues for every role: staves and robes for casters, a two-handed axe, a tank shield and a good spread of cloaks. It's a run for characters from level 22 to 30, and the natural next step for Horde characters questing in Silverpine.

Getting there

Shadowfang Keep stands in southern Silverpine Forest, on the hill above Pyrewood Village. From the Sepulcher, follow the road south and take the path up to the keep's gate.

Silverpine is Horde territory, and all three quests here are Horde-only. Alliance groups come for the loot alone.

Bosses

Rethilgore

Level 20EliteShow on map: Rethilgore

The Cell Keeper guards the keep's prison, where Deathstalker Adamant and Sorcerer Ashcrombe are locked up. Kill him, then talk to your faction's prisoner: Adamant for the Horde, Ashcrombe for the Alliance. Your prisoner opens the courtyard door, and that door is the only way on. Horde players: Adamant is one of the two deathstalkers that Deathstalkers in Shadowfang sends you to find. Rethilgore's Soul Drain roots a player for 10 seconds while it drains their health into his, so interrupt the 2-second cast or dispel it.

Abilities

  • Soul DrainMagic effectCan be interrupted

Roots a player for 10 seconds and drains their health into his. Interrupt the 2-second cast or dispel it.

Fel Steed / Shadow Charger

Level 20

No guide text for this fight yet. The abilities are from the game data.

Abilities

  • Fel StompHealers

The Fel Steed stuns everyone near it for 3 seconds, and they take more Physical damage. The Shadow Charger has no ability.

The keep's butcher drains mana from his target with Butcher Drain, so a tank who fights on mana should start the pull full. Let the tank build a threat lead before anyone opens up. He drops Butcher's Cleaver, a fast one-handed axe with Strength.

Abilities

  • Butcher DrainTank

Drains 350 mana from his target in melee: a tank with mana feels it.

The keep's dead lord casts Veil of Shadow, which cuts the healing its target receives. When it lands on the tank, heals barely land until it fades, and that's the dangerous window. It's a curse: a Mage's Remove Lesser Curse, from 18, or a Druid's Remove Curse, from 24, strips it.

He drops Baron's Scepter, a mace that makes every party member near you regenerate health.

Tank

When Veil of Shadow lands on you, use a defensive cooldown: your heals barely land until it fades.

Healer

Keep the tank high between Veils, so each one starts from full health.

Damage

Each Veil lasts 15 seconds, so a faster kill means fewer windows the healer has to survive.

Abilities

  • Veil of ShadowHealersCurse

Curses a player: healing on them is 75% weaker for 15 seconds. Remove it, above all from the tank.

The undead commander heals himself with Holy Light. Interrupt every cast and he dies quickly; let the heals through and the fight drags on. He also stuns with Hammer of Justice, so have a second interrupter ready for when the first one is stunned. Divine Shield makes him immune to damage and spells for 10 seconds, so wait it out. He drops Arced War Axe, a two-handed axe with Strength and Stamina, and Commander's Crest, a tank shield.

Tank

Hold him still so every melee player can reach him to interrupt.

Healer

Keep the tank steady and spend mana carefully: the fight lasts as long as his heals do.

Damage

Rotate interrupts on Holy Light so none gets through.

Abilities

  • Holy LightCan be interrupted

Heals himself or an ally (2.5-second cast). Interrupt it.

  • Divine ShieldImportant

Makes him immune to all damage and spells for 10 seconds.

  • Hammer of JusticeMagic effect

Stuns a player for 4 seconds.

Odo grows more dangerous as he loses health: each time he howls with Howling Rage, he gets stronger. He also calls every creature within 30 yards when pulled, so clear around him first. Save your cooldowns for the end of the fight and finish him fast.

He drops Odo's Ley Staff, a staff with a big healing bonus.

Tank

Hold your defensive cooldowns for his last rage.

Healer

The damage on the tank climbs through the fight. Spend your mana carefully early.

Damage

Burst him once he's low: the longer the last stage lasts, the harder it gets.

Abilities

  • Calls for helpImportant

When pulled, he calls the creatures within 30 yards to join him. Clear around him first.

  • Howling RageTankEnrage

At 60%, 40% and 20% health his blows grow stronger.

Arugal's Voidwalker

Level 24

Four of them come after Fenrus the Devourer dies: Arugal appears for a moment and calls them.

No guide text for this fight yet. The abilities are from the game data.

Abilities

  • Dark OfferingDamage dealers

Heals another voidwalker. Bring them down one at a time.

Fenrus is a huge wolf. His Toxic Saliva is a poison that burns his target and drains their mana for two minutes: cure it with Purify or Cure Poison. Tank him away from the group and burn him down. He drops Fenrus' Hide, an Agility cloak, and Black Wolf Bracers, leather bracers with Stamina and Attack Power.

Abilities

  • Toxic SalivaPoison

Nature damage every 6 seconds and drained mana, for 2 minutes. Cure the poison.

Nandos is the last stop before Arugal. Lupine Horrors prowl near him: clear them before you pull, so he fights alone. The longer the fight runs, the more worgs join him, so burn him down quickly. He drops Wolfmaster Cape, a cloak with Attack Power, and Feline Mantle for casters.

Abilities

  • More worgsDamage dealersImportant

The longer the fight, the more worgs join him: a Bleak Worg after 30 to 45 seconds, then a Slavering Worg, then a Lupine Horror.

Archmage Arugal

Level 26EliteFinal bossShow on map: Archmage Arugal

Arugal teleports around his chamber, so the fight keeps moving. He throws Void Bolts, stuns everyone near him with Thundershock, and uses Arugal's Curse to turn a player into a worgen that fights for him for ten seconds.

Spread out, keep the healer away from him, and never kill a cursed party member: wait out the ten seconds. His head completes Arugal Must Die, and he drops Meteor Shard, a dagger with a Fire damage proc.

Tank

Follow him every time he teleports and pick him back up fast.

Healer

Stay out of Thundershock range, and keep your distance from anyone Arugal's Curse turns.

Damage

Interrupt Void Bolt. When a party member is cursed, stop attacking them and wait it out.

Abilities

  • Void BoltCan be interrupted

A 3-second Shadow bolt on the tank, over and over. Interrupt it.

  • Arugal's CurseCurseImportant

Turns a player other than the tank into a Shadowfang Glutton that fights for him for 10 seconds. Remove the curse.

  • Shadow PortImportant

He teleports between his ledge, the upper ledge and the stairs.

  • ThundershockTank

When the tank reaches him: Nature damage and a 5-second stun around him.

Trash and pulls

  • The keep mixes three kinds of enemy, and each takes its own crowd control. The Shadowfang worgen are Humanoids: Sap and Polymorph. The worgs and bats are Beasts: Hibernate and Polymorph. The ghosts, Haunted Servitors, Wailing Guardsmen and Tormented Officers, are Undead: Shackle Undead, from level 20.
  • Damage breaks every one of those, so keep AoE off crowd-controlled targets.
  • The highest-level trash, Sons of Arugal and Shadowfang Ragetooths, holds the last stretch of the keep around Fenrus, Nandos and Arugal. Pull them one pack at a time.

Loot

Casters get the most out of the keep, but every role has something to roll on:

Tips

  • Free your faction's prisoner right after Rethilgore: the courtyard door stays shut until you do.
  • Bring a Priest with Shackle Undead if you can: the halls are full of ghosts.
  • Save your interrupts for the casts that matter: Springvale's Holy Light and Arugal's Void Bolt.
  • For Arugal, spread out and never kill a cursed party member.
