Overview

Gnomeregan was the gnomes' capital until the troggs broke in from below and the city was flooded with radiation to stop them. What's left belongs to Mekgineer Thermaplugg, the gnome who betrayed his people, along with his robots, the irradiated leper gnomes and the troggs that never left.

It's a long dungeon with a lot to show for it: 27 quests between the two factions, blue drops for every role, and a stack of Engineering schematics from the final boss. Block out a long session and bring a full group.

Getting there

Gnomeregan's entrance is in the mountains of western Dun Morogh, west of Kharanos. The instance portal sits at the bottom of the ruined city's outer halls, so expect a few fights on the way down.

Dun Morogh is Alliance territory. Horde groups have their own quests here, but the trip in is long. After your first clear, the Workshop Key gives you a back way in: see Electrocutioner 6000 below.

Quests

Gnomeregan has 27 quests on its list, and they sort cleanly. Most are Alliance quests that hand in at Ironforge, Kharanos and Stormwind, the Horde chain runs through Booty Bay and Orgrimmar, and a handful work for both factions. Pick up everything for your side before you go: the quests both factions share start inside the dungeon.

Alliance

Four "speak with" quests introduce you to the gnomes who want things from Gnomeregan: Tinkmaster Overspark and Castpipe's Task (Tinkmaster Overspark and Master Mechanic Castpipe in Ironforge), Klockmort's Essentials (Klockmort Spannerspan in Ironforge) and The Day After (Ozzie Togglevolt in Kharanos). Then:

  • Save Techbot's Brain!: Techbot's Memory Core for Tinkmaster Overspark.
  • Data Rescue: a Prismatic Punch Card for Master Mechanic Castpipe.
  • Essential Artificials: 12 Essential Artificials for Klockmort Spannerspan.
  • Gnogaine: use the Empty Leaden Collection Phial on Irradiated Invaders or Irradiated Pillagers until it's full, then take it to Ozzie Togglevolt.
  • The Only Cure is More Green Glow: High Potency Radioactive Fallout for Ozzie, who also wants the Heavy Leaden Collection Phial when you're done. The fallout is unstable and collapses quickly, so collect it last and head straight back.
  • Gyrodrillmatic Excavationators: 24 Robo-mechanical Guts for Shoni in Stormwind.
  • The Grand Betrayal: kill Mekgineer Thermaplugg and return to High Tinker Mekkatorque.

Horde

  • Chief Engineer Scooty sends you to Scooty in Booty Bay, and Gnomer-gooooone! has you wait while Scooty calibrates the Goblin Transponder.
  • Rig Wars: retrieve the Rig Blueprints and Thermaplugg's Safe Combination from Gnomeregan for Nogg in Orgrimmar.

Both factions

  • A Fine Mess: escort Kernobee to the Clockwerk Run exit, then report to Scooty in Booty Bay.
  • The Sparklematic 5200!: put a Grime-Encrusted Object and three silver coins into the Sparklematic 5200. More Sparklematic Action runs another one through. The list shows several copies of both: they're the same job.
  • Grime-Encrusted Ring: get the grime off the Grime-Encrusted Ring, which also costs three silver. Then Return of the Ring (Alliance) or Return of the Ring (Horde) lets you keep the ring or track down whoever left the imprint and engravings inside the band.

Bosses

Techbot

Level 26

No guide text for this fight yet. The abilities are from the game data.

Abilities

  • Battle NetImportant

Roots everyone near it for 10 seconds.

  • LagMagic effect

Slows a player's attacks and movement for 10 seconds, and can stun them.

  • Summon Dupe BugDamage dealers

Calls Dupe Bugs to its side. Its Patch kills them and heals it.

Grubbis

Level 32EliteShow on map: Grubbis

Grubbis only appears if you run Blastmaster Emi Shortfuse's event. Talk to her and she starts setting charges to seal the trogg tunnels, while troggs pour out at her in waves. Hold them off until both tunnels collapse, and Grubbis arrives with his pet Chomper.

Kill Chomper first, then Grubbis, and keep Emi alive the whole way: the event depends on her. Grubbis drops Grubbis Paws, mail gloves with Strength, Agility and Spirit.

Tank

Stand next to Emi so the troggs run into you, and grab anything that reaches her.

Healer

Heal Emi as well as the group. She's the objective.

Damage

Kill whatever is hitting Emi first. When Grubbis arrives, burn Chomper, then Grubbis.

Viscous Fallout

Level 30EliteShow on map: Viscous Fallout

Viscous Fallout is a giant radioactive ooze. Pull it to your group and burn it down. Its best drop for casters is Hydrocane, a two-handed staff with 36 spell damage and healing.

The security robot carries the Workshop Key, so make sure someone loots it. The key opens the Workshop Door at Gnomeregan's back entrance, a shortcut for your later runs. Its Megavolt hits a cone in front of it, so only the tank should stand there, and Chain Bolt jumps between players, so interrupt it.

Abilities

  • MegavoltCan be interrupted

Nature damage in a cone in front of it (2-second cast). Only the tank in front.

  • Chain BoltCan be interrupted

Lightning that jumps to nearby players (2.5-second cast). Interrupt it.

The Pummeler's Crowd Pummel hits everyone standing next to it and interrupts their spellcasting. Keep your healer and casters at range, and let only the tank and melee stand in reach. Its drop Manual Crowd Pummeler is a two-handed mace you can use to raise your attack speed by 50% for 30 sec, once every 3 minutes.

Tank

Hold the Pummeler where you pick it up. Every step toward the group brings your healer into Crowd Pummel's reach.

Healer

Stay out of melee range. Crowd Pummel interrupts spells cast next to it, so you can't heal from its feet.

Damage

Ranged, keep your distance. Melee, you take Crowd Pummel hits along with the tank, so watch your health.

Abilities

  • Crowd PummelImportant

Hits everyone near it and interrupts their spells. Casters and healers, keep your distance.

  • Arcing SmashTank

Hits everyone in a cone in front of it.

  • Trample

    Hits everyone standing close.

Mekgineer Thermaplugg

Level 34EliteFinal bossShow on map: Mekgineer Thermaplugg

The traitor fights from inside his mech in a chamber at the end of the dungeon, and six bomb bays, each a gnome face on the wall, ring the room. During the fight he activates them, and Walking Bombs march out and explode when they reach you, hitting everyone nearby.

Every bay has a button beneath it: press the button under an active bay to shut it down. Below half health he switches them on faster, and his Knock Away, which knocks the tank back, then hits everyone around him. Give one player the buttons and have everyone else kill any bomb that gets loose. Killing Thermaplugg completes The Grand Betrayal.

Tank

Hold Thermaplugg where he stands and let the rest of the group handle the bombs.

Healer

A bomb that gets through hits everyone near it. Keep the whole group topped up, not just the tank.

Damage

One of you runs the buttons. Everyone else kills loose bombs first, then goes back to Thermaplugg.

Abilities

  • Walking BombsImportantDeadly

He switches on the gnome faces around the room one by one, and each sends out Walking Bombs that explode when they reach a player. The button next to a face switches it off. Below half health he switches them on faster.

  • Knock AwayTank

Knocks the tank back. Below half health it hits everyone around him.

Trash and pulls

  • Gnomeregan mixes humanoids (troggs, leper gnomes and Dark Iron dwarves) with robots and radioactive oozes. Sap and Polymorph only work on the humanoids. For robots, use Freezing Trap, which works on anything, or burn them down.
  • Leper gnome packs mix elites with non-elites. AoE the small ones down while the tank holds the elites.
  • It's a long dungeon, so pull at a steady pace and don't chain packs to save time. A wipe deep inside costs far more than a careful pull.

Tips

  • Stack your faction's quests before you go: Ironforge, Kharanos and Stormwind for Alliance, Booty Bay and Orgrimmar for Horde.
  • Loot the Workshop Key from Electrocutioner 6000. It's your back door for the next run.
  • Put your most alert player on Thermaplugg's buttons, not the tank or the healer.
  • Clean your Grime-Encrusted Objects at the Sparklematic 5200 before you leave, and bring silver: every run through the machine costs three.
  • Alliance: collect the High Potency Radioactive Fallout last and go straight to Ozzie, before it collapses.
