Overview

The Sunken Temple is the Temple of Atal'Hakkar, a troll temple drowned in the Swamp of Sorrows. The Atal'ai trolls inside still work to bring their blood god Hakkar into the world, and a flight of green dragonkin guards the halls around them. It's a run for level 50 and up (you can enter from 45), with a full set of quests and rare drops for every armor type.

The temple is a maze of ledges, pits and flooded halls, and it pays a group that knows the route. Two events decide how much you take home: the statue puzzle that wakes Atal'alarion, and the ritual that summons the Avatar of Hakkar. Neither is required to finish the run, and both are worth the time.

Getting there

The temple lies sunk in the Pool of Tears, the lake in the Swamp of Sorrows. Swim out to the ruin, go inside and follow the stairs down to the instance portal.

The Swamp of Sorrows is contested territory. Stonard, the Horde town in the swamp, is where Fel'Zerul takes the Horde temple quest.

Quests

Stack everything you can before you come: most of these are done inside the temple, and the rest need something you carry out of it.

  • Into the Depths: find the Altar of Hakkar inside the temple.
  • Secret of the Circle: discover the secret hidden in the circle of statues. That's the statue puzzle on the Atal'alarion card below.
  • Into The Temple of Atal'Hakkar (Alliance): gather 10 Atal'ai Tablets for Brohann Caskbelly in Stormwind.
  • The Temple of Atal'Hakkar (Horde): collect 20 Fetishes of Hakkar for Fel'Zerul in Stonard.
  • Jammal'an the Prophet: the Atal'ai Exile in The Hinterlands wants the Head of Jammal'an.
  • The God Hakkar: bring the Filled Egg of Hakkar and the Essence of Hakkar to Yeh'kinya in Tanaris. The egg is what starts the Avatar of Hakkar ritual, so build the run around this one.
  • The Essence of Eranikus starts from the Essence of Eranikus, which the Shade of Eranikus drops: place it in the Essence Font in his lair before you leave.
  • The Sunken Temple (Horde) only sends you to Marvon Rivetseeker in Tanaris.

Eranikus, Tyrant of the Dream is a level-60 quest that sends you to Teldrassil, outside the walls of Darnassus. Leave it for later.

Loot (9)

Atal'alarion

Level 50Elite

Atal'alarion, the Guardian of the Idol, doesn't stand anywhere until you call him. Six Atal'ai Statues ring the Idol of Hakkar. Activate them in this order: south, north, southwest, southeast, northwest, northeast. After the sixth, Atal'alarion rises and defends the idol.

The puzzle is also the secret that Secret of the Circle asks you to discover. He drops Headspike, a polearm with Strength and Stamina.

Tank

Stand at the idol before the sixth statue so you catch him the moment he rises.

Healer

Drink and top everyone off before the last statue: the fight starts as soon as he's up.

Damage

Stay behind him and give the tank a few hits before you open up.

Spawn of Hakkar

Loot (2)

Avatar of Hakkar

Level 49Elite

The Avatar only shows up if your group brings the Egg of Hakkar, the quest item for The God Hakkar. Use it in the Sanctum of the Fallen God to begin the ritual:

  • Hakkari Bloodkeepers arrive carrying Hakkari Blood. Kill them and use the blood on the four Eternal Flames around the summoning circle.
  • Nightmare Suppressors come to stop the ritual. Kill each one the moment it appears.
  • When the last flame goes out, the Avatar of Hakkar arrives.

The Avatar drops the Essence of Hakkar: use it to fill the egg. The Avatar also drops Spire of Hakkar, a caster staff, and Embrace of the Wind Serpent, an epic cloth robe.

Tank

Pick up every Bloodkeeper and Suppressor as it arrives, then grab the Avatar the moment it appears.

Healer

The ritual is a long fight before the boss even shows up. Drink before you use the egg and pace your mana.

Damage

Suppressors first, Bloodkeepers second: the blood comes from dead Bloodkeepers, and the flames need all of it.

A forcefield bars the way to Jammal'an until his six troll champions are dead: Gasher, Hukku, Loro, Mijan, Zolo and Zul'Lor. Each one is an elite undead troll with his own post in the temple, and Hukku fights with his demons: Hukku's Voidwalker, Hukku's Succubus and Hukku's Imp. Find all six before you look for the prophet.

Jammal'an fights beside Ogom the Wretched, and Ogom's drops are on his own card below. Jammal'an's Hex of Jammal'an transforms a party member into a danger to their own group for a short time. Don't kill a hexed friend: step away from them and keep hitting Jammal'an.

His head is the Head of Jammal'an for Jammal'an the Prophet.

Tank

Hold both Jammal'an and Ogom so neither one runs loose on your healer.

Healer

A hexed player hits their own side. Keep the tank and the hexed player's target alive until the hex ends.

Damage

Kill Jammal'an first to end the hexes, then Ogom.

Dreamscythe

Level 53Elite

Dreamscythe is the first of the temple's four green dragons, and all four drop from the same table. Every dragon is another chance at Smoldering Claw, a polearm that hurls fireballs, and Dawnspire Cord, a healer's cloth belt.

Treat every dragon here the same way: the tank turns it away from the group, and nobody else stands in front of it.

Tank

Turn him away from the group before anyone attacks, and keep him facing that way.

Healer

Stand to his side, never in front of him.

Damage

Attack from his side or rear. Only the tank belongs in front of a dragon.

Weaver

Level 51Elite

Weaver is the second green dragon and fights the same way as Dreamscythe: face him away from the group and keep everyone else out of his front. His loot is the shared dragon table.

Hazzas

Level 53EliteShow on map: Hazzas

Hazzas is Morphaz's partner: pull them together and finish him second. Same rules as every dragon here: the tank faces him away, and everyone else stays out of his front.

Morphaz

Level 52EliteShow on map: Morphaz

Morphaz and Hazzas stand together, so you fight the last two dragons before the Shade as a pair. Tank them side by side, both facing away from the group, and kill one at a time. They share the dragon table with Dreamscythe and Weaver.

Tank

Hold both dragons and turn them away from the group together.

Healer

Two dragons means twice the melee on the tank. Stay on the tank and out of both fronts.

Damage

Kill Morphaz first, then Hazzas, and stay behind them.

Shade of Eranikus

Level 55EliteFinal bossShow on map: Shade of Eranikus

The Shade of Eranikus waits in his lair as the temple's final fight. He's a green dragon like the others: face him away from the group and keep everyone out of his front.

He drops the Essence of Eranikus, which starts The Essence of Eranikus: place it in the Essence Font in his lair before you leave. His epic sword, Dragon's Call, has the highest item level of anything in the temple.

Tank

Turn him away from the group and hold him in place for the whole fight.

Healer

Stand to his side, out of his front, where you can see the tank.

Damage

Attack from his side or rear, and don't leave the lair until the Essence is in the font.

Trash and pulls

  • The temple mixes living trolls, undead trolls, dragonkin and beasts, so every crowd-control class has work. Polymorph and Sap handle the living Atal'ai, Shackle Undead handles the undead ones, and Hibernate handles the dragonkin and beasts.
  • Atal'ai Witch Doctors and Atal'ai High Priests are casters. Pull their packs around a corner so they come to you instead of casting from range.
  • Take the dragonkin packs (Nightmare Scalebanes, Nightmare Wyrmkin and Nightmare Wanderers) one at a time, and Hibernate one if you have a druid.
  • The six troll champions are the long part of the run. Clear the approach to each one before you pull him, so no pack joins the fight.

Loot

Every armor type finds something in the temple. The standouts:

  • Casters and healers: Spire of Hakkar from the Avatar of Hakkar, a staff with a big spell damage and healing bonus, and Kilt of the Atal'ai Prophet from Jammal'an the Prophet, cloth legs with Intellect and Spirit. Dawnspire Cord and Nightfall Drape drop from all four dragons.
  • Melee: Smoldering Claw from the four dragons, a polearm that hurls fireballs, and Fist of the Damned from Ogom the Wretched, a one-handed mace that steals life. Dragon's Call, the Shade of Eranikus's epic sword, tops the list.
  • Tanks: Headspike from Atal'alarion, a polearm with Strength and Stamina, Crest of Supremacy from the Shade of Eranikus, a shield, and Warrior's Embrace from the Avatar of Hakkar, a plate chest.
  • Mail: Horns of Eranikus from the Shade of Eranikus, a mail helm with Intellect and Spirit.
  • Leather: Windscale Sarong from the Avatar of Hakkar and Bloodfire Talons from the four dragons.

Tips

  • Statue order for Atal'alarion: south, north, southwest, southeast, northwest, northeast.
  • Kill all six troll champions before you go looking for Jammal'an. The forcefield holds until the last one dies.
  • Bring the Egg of Hakkar if anyone is on The God Hakkar. Without it there's no Avatar, and none of his drops.
  • Face every dragon away from the group, bosses and trash alike.
  • Don't leave the Shade of Eranikus's lair with the Essence of Eranikus still in your bags: the Essence Font is right there.
