Overview

The Deadmines is the Defias Brotherhood's hideout under Westfall: goblin tunnels, a foundry, and a pirate ship parked in a hidden cove. It's a staple for Alliance characters in their late teens and a rewarding run before 20: a stack of quests, and blue drops for every role.

The run is linear, and a careful group clears it in one sitting. The fights on the ship are the ones that punish a sloppy pull.

New in Forever

Getting there

The entrance sits in Moonbrook, the ruined town in southern Westfall. Follow the mine tunnel down past the Defias guards and you reach the instance portal.

Westfall is Alliance territory. Horde groups can run The Deadmines too, but every quest here is Alliance-only, so the run pays Alliance characters far more.

Quests

Pick up everything before you zone in: most of these send you to Stormwind or Sentinel Hill to hand in, and the rewards are worth the walk.

  • Red Silk Bandanas from Scout Riell at the Sentinel Hill Tower: collect 10 Red Silk Bandanas from the Defias inside.
  • Collecting Memories: 4 Miners' Union Cards for Wilder Thistlenettle in Stormwind.
  • Oh Brother...: bring Foreman Thistlenettle's Explorers' League Badge to Wilder Thistlenettle.
  • Underground Assault: recover the Gnoam Sprecklesprocket for Shoni the Shilent in Stormwind.
  • The Defias Brotherhood: Edwin VanCleef's head for Gryan Stoutmantle. This is the big one.
  • The Unsent Letter starts from An Unsent Letter, which VanCleef drops. Take it to Baros Alexston in Stormwind.

Bosses

Rhahk'Zor

Level 19EliteShow on map: Rhahk'Zor

The ogre foreman guards the end of the first tunnel. He's a straight melee fight that hits hard for this level, and his Slam stuns the tank for 3 seconds, so let the tank build threat before anyone opens up. Clear the Defias miners around him first so he fights alone.

Tank

Pull him back into the tunnel, away from any stray miners.

Healer

Stay topped up on mana before the pull. His hits are heavy for the level.

Damage

Wait for a couple of tank hits, then go all in. The Slam on the tank is his only trick.

Abilities

  • Rhahk'Zor SlamTank

Hits the tank hard and stuns them for 3 seconds.

Miner Johnson

A rare Defias miner in the tunnels between Rhahk'Zor and Sneed, so he isn't there every run. When he is, he's a quick kill and a shot at Gold-plated Buckler.

Sneed

Level 20EliteShow on map: Sneed

Sneed fights inside Sneed's Shredder in the lumber mill. Kill the Shredder first. Sneed then jumps out and fights on foot, and he goes down fast. The Shredder makes a player flee in fear for 4 seconds with Terrify and slows a player's casting with Distracting Pain; Sneed disarms the tank for 6 seconds. His own loot is on this card. The Shredder's, including Buzz Saw, is on the Sneed's Shredder card.

Tank

Keep the Shredder facing away from the group, then grab Sneed the moment he climbs out.

Healer

This is a two-stage fight: save some mana for Sneed after the Shredder dies.

Damage

Stay on the Shredder until it dies, then switch to Sneed immediately.

Abilities

  • DisarmTank

Disarms the tank for 6 seconds.

Sneed's Shredder

Level 20

No guide text for this fight yet. The abilities are from the game data.

Abilities

  • TerrifyMagic effect

Makes a player flee in fear for 4 seconds.

  • Distracting PainHealers

    Slows a player's casting by 35% for 15 seconds.

Gilnid

Level 20EliteShow on map: Gilnid

The goblin smelter runs the foundry, and the foundry is full of goblin workers. Clear the room edge by edge before you touch him: the danger here is mostly extra goblins. Gilnid's own Molten Metal burns a player for 15 seconds and slows their attacks and movement, so interrupt the 2-second cast.

Tank

Pull the foundry's goblins in small groups and bring Gilnid to a cleared corner.

Healer

Watch for loose goblins running at you from the catwalks.

Damage

Kill the workers first, then interrupt Gilnid's Molten Metal.

Abilities

  • Molten MetalHealersCan be interrupted

Fire damage every 3 seconds for 15 seconds, with slower attacks and movement. Interrupt the 2-second cast.

Mr. Smite

Level 20EliteShow on map: Mr. Smite

Mr. Smite guards the cove where the ship is docked. Twice during the fight he uses Smite Stomp to stun everyone around him and runs to his chest to change weapons: first to two one-handers, then to a heavy two-handed hammer. Each weapon change makes him hit harder, so save your burst for the last stage.

Tank

Tank him next to his chest so the weapon swaps don't pull him away from your group.

Healer

The stuns land on you too. Keep the tank high before each swap, because you lose a few seconds of healing.

Damage

Save cooldowns for the two-handed hammer stage, when he hits hardest.

Abilities

  • Smite StompImportant

At 66% and again at 33% health he stuns everyone around him, then walks to his chest to change weapons.

  • ThrashTank

With his two axes, from 66% health: extra attacks on the tank.

  • Smite SlamTank

With his hammer, below 33% health: a heavy blow that stuns the tank for 3 seconds.

The captain holds the deck with his Defias Pirates. Pull him and his crew together, kill the pirates, then finish Greenskin. His Poisoned Harpoon is an interruptible cast that poisons for a minute, so cure it, and Cleave hits his target and the player nearest to it. He drops a piece of the Defias Leather set: Blackened Defias Belt.

Tank

Face Greenskin away from the group and hold the pirates close to him.

Healer

Stand at range on the deck, where you can see the whole fight.

Damage

Crowd-control or burn the pirates first, then turn on the captain.

Abilities

  • Poisoned HarpoonPoisonCan be interrupted

A 2-second cast: a hit, then Nature damage for a minute. Cure the poison.

  • CleaveTank

Hits his target and the player nearest to it.

Edwin VanCleef

Level 21EliteFinal bossShow on map: Edwin VanCleef

The leader of the Defias waits at the top of the ship with his guards. Clear the stairs first, then fight him on the top deck. At half health he calls in Defias Blackguards: pick them up and kill them fast, because they add a lot of damage on the tank.

He drops An Unsent Letter, which starts The Unsent Letter, and his head completes The Defias Brotherhood.

Tank

Hold VanCleef at the back of the deck and taunt the Blackguards the moment they arrive.

Healer

The fight turns when the Blackguards join. Save a big heal for that moment.

Damage

Switch to the Blackguards as soon as they appear, then finish VanCleef.

Abilities

  • ThrashTank

Now and then two extra attacks: heavy hits on the tank.

  • VanCleef's AlliesImportant

At half health he calls two Defias Blackguards.

Trash and pulls

  • The Defias casters, Defias Evokers and Defias Squallshapers, hit harder than they look. Pull them around corners so they come to you instead of casting from range.
  • The foundry is the one crowded room. Clear it from the edges and never fight on the catwalks with goblins still up.
  • On the ship, pull one pack at a time up the stairs. The deck gives everything line of sight on you, so a careless pull there brings the whole crew.

Tips

  • Stack every quest before you zone in. The bandanas and the Miners' Union Cards drop as you clear, so the run finishes most of them without backtracking.
  • Kill the Shredder before Sneed, every time.
  • Save your cooldowns for Mr. Smite's hammer stage and VanCleef's Blackguards. Those two moments decide the run.
  • Loot An Unsent Letter from VanCleef: it starts another quest.
