Overview
Enhancement is the Shaman who swings a two-handed axe or mace and throws lightning between swings. Forever rebuilt the tree around that idea. Maelstrom Weapon turns your melee hits into stacks that make your next Lightning Bolt instant and free. Stormstrike hits for full weapon damage and adds 20% to your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock. Rage of the Farseer caps the tree with 30% attack speed for 25 seconds.
The biggest change is how the spec scales. Mental Dexterity turns 100% of your Intellect into Attack Power, and Mental Quickness turns 30% of it into Spell Power. Intellect is a damage stat for you now, not just a mana pool, and gear with Strength and Intellect feeds both halves of your damage.
Enhancement is also the Shaman's leveling spec. Melee costs no mana, Shamanistic Focus makes your shocks cheap, and Improved Ghost Wolf gives you an instant, indoor Ghost Wolf from level 20. At 60 you have a raid build with real Lightning Bolt damage, and a tank build for five-player dungeons.
Strengths
- Almost no downtime while leveling. You fight with a free melee swing and heal yourself between pulls.
- Big, spiky damage: Windfury procs, Stormstrike and an instant Lightning Bolt that lands with the Stormstrike bonus.
- Every stat you want is on the same gear. Strength, Intellect and Critical Strike all push both your melee and your spells.
- Group buffs for melee: Strength of Earth Totem and one Air totem, Windfury Totem or Grace of Air Totem.
- Instant Ghost Wolf and Reincarnation make travel fast and corpse runs rare.
- A dungeon tanking build with dodge, parry, extra threat and Stormstrike resets.
Weaknesses
- One weapon. Shamans don't dual wield, so your damage lives and dies on your two-hander.
- Windfury is random. Your damage from pull to pull swings more than a Rogue's or Warrior's.
- Every spell and totem costs mana, and melee doesn't restore any.
- You stand in melee range. Cleaves, frontal breaths and knockbacks hit you like any other melee.
- No single-target taunt. As a dungeon tank you hold mobs with threat alone, and Stoneclaw Totem is your only taunt: an 8-yard pull onto the totem.
What's new in Forever
- Maelstrom Weapon (tier 6, 5 ranks): melee damage has a chance to take 20% off the cast time and mana cost of your next Lightning Bolt, stacking 5 times for 30 seconds. At five stacks Lightning Bolt is instant and free.
- Stormstrike (requires level 40) strikes for normal weapon damage on an 8-second cooldown and adds 20% to your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock for 12 seconds. The bonus is yours alone.
- Improved Stormstrike (new, 2 ranks): every Stormstrike gives 50% mana regeneration while casting for 15 seconds, and every dodge or parry resets Stormstrike's cooldown.
- Mental Dexterity (3 ranks) gives Attack Power equal to 100% of your Intellect. Mental Quickness (2 ranks) gives Spell Power equal to 30% of it.
- Rage of the Farseer (tier 7 talent, needs 30 points in Enhancement): +30% attack speed for 25 seconds on a 3-minute cooldown.
- Shamanistic Focus (new): Shocks and Lightning Shield cost 45% less mana.
- Thundering Strikes now gives 5% critical strike chance with spells as well as attacks, and Flurry gives up to 25% attack speed for 3 swings after a melee crit.
- Spirit Weapons now also changes your threat: 30% less without Rockbiter Weapon, 30% more with it.
- Improved Ghost Wolf at 2/2 makes Ghost Wolf instant and usable indoors.
- Weapon imbues last 60 minutes. Windfury Weapon on your main hand stops you personally benefiting from Windfury Totem, and Flametongue Weapon does the same with Flametongue Totem.
- Two-handed axes and maces need no talent. Flurry, Stormstrike and Windfury all work with your two-hander from the first point.
Talents
The leveling build. Thundering Strikes and Flurry keep your swings fast and critical, Mental Dexterity turns your Intellect into Attack Power, and Elemental Weapons and Ancestral Knowledge feed both. Ghost Wolf is instant from the moment you learn it at 20. Stormstrike requires level 40, so it waits for the 60 builds.
Split 0/21/0 · 21 points at level 30 · Open in calculator
Talent order
- Levels 10–14: 5/5 Thundering Strikes. +5% critical strike chance with every attack and spell. It feeds Flurry later and Elemental Devastation at 60.
- Levels 15–17: 3/3 Mental Dexterity. Attack Power equal to all of your Intellect. At level 15 that is a large share of your total damage.
- Levels 18–19: 2/2 Improved Ghost Wolf. Ghost Wolf is instant and works indoors the moment you train it at 20, instead of a 3-second cast every time you move.
- Level 20: 1/1 Shamanistic Focus. Shocks and Lightning Shield cost 45% less mana.
- Levels 21–23: 3/3 Elemental Weapons. +20% to Rockbiter Weapon's Attack Power bonus, and later +40% to Windfury Weapon's.
- Level 24: 1/5 Ancestral Knowledge. +2% Intellect, which is +2% Attack Power from Intellect. It also opens tier 4.
- Levels 25–29: 5/5 Flurry. 25% attack speed for three swings after every melee crit. With 5% extra crit from Thundering Strikes, it's up for much of every fight.
- Level 30: 2/5 Ancestral Knowledge. +4% Intellect, which is more Attack Power, more mana and more healing between pulls.
Flexible points
- Melee mobs hitting too hard: take 1/3 Anticipation at 30 instead of the second Ancestral Knowledge point for 2% dodge.
- Leveling mostly in dungeons: take 2/2 Guardian Totems at 18–19 instead of Improved Ghost Wolf. Your Stoneskin Totem blocks 20% more for the whole party.
The raid build. 35 points in Enhancement take every damage talent down to Rage of the Farseer. The 16 points in Elemental add 5% Lightning Bolt and Earth Shock damage, a stronger Flame Shock, and Elemental Devastation: every spell crit gives you +9% melee crit for 10 seconds.

Enhancement: 35 points
- 5/5 Thundering Strikes: +5% crit with melee and spells.
- 5/5 Ancestral Knowledge: +10% Intellect, which Mental Dexterity turns into Attack Power and Mental Quickness into Spell Power.
- 2/2 Improved Ghost Wolf: instant Ghost Wolf for raid movement and corpse runs.
- 3/3 Mental Dexterity: Attack Power equal to 100% of your Intellect.
- 3/3 Elemental Weapons: +40% to Windfury Weapon's Attack Power bonus.
- 1/1 Shamanistic Focus: cheap Shocks.
- 5/5 Flurry: 25% attack speed after crits.
- 1/1 Stormstrike and 2/2 Improved Stormstrike: your cooldown strike, and 50% mana regeneration while casting for 15 seconds after every Stormstrike.
- 2/2 Mental Quickness: Spell Power equal to 30% of your Intellect.
- 5/5 Maelstrom Weapon: a free, instant Lightning Bolt every time you reach five stacks.
- 1/1 Rage of the Farseer: 30% attack speed for 25 seconds every 3 minutes.
Elemental: 16 points
- 5/5 Concussion: +5% Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Earth Shock damage.
- 3/3 Elemental Devastation: your offensive spell crits give +9% melee crit chance for 10 seconds. Every Maelstrom Lightning Bolt and Earth Shock is a chance to turn it on.
- 3/3 Call of Flame: +15% Flame Shock damage.
- 4/5 Reverberation: your Shocks come back 0.8 seconds sooner.
- 1/1 Elemental Focus: free Shocks and Lightning Bolts on a 10% proc.
Flexible points
- Mana problems on long fights: move Reverberation's 4 points into 4/5 Convection. You lose a little Shock uptime and gain 8% cheaper Shocks and Lightning Bolts.
- Raid only, no travel: move Improved Ghost Wolf's 2 points into the fifth rank of Reverberation and 1/5 Convection.
The dungeon tank build. Rockbiter Weapon with Spirit Weapons adds 30% threat, Anticipation and Spirit Weapons give you dodge and parry, and every dodge or parry resets Stormstrike. Toughness and Improved Reincarnation add health, Guardian Totems makes Stoneskin Totem stronger, and Improved Lightning Shield adds 15% to Lightning Shield's orbs. You have no single-target taunt: you hold threat with Rockbiter, Earth Shock and Stormstrike, and a mob you lose comes back only through threat or Stoneclaw Totem.
Split 0/42/9 · 51 points at level 60 · Open in calculator
Enhancement: 42 points
- 5/5 Thundering Strikes, 3/3 Mental Dexterity, 3/3 Elemental Weapons, 5/5 Flurry: the damage core. Elemental Weapons adds 20% to Rockbiter Weapon's Attack Power bonus.
- 2/2 Guardian Totems: Stoneskin Totem blocks 20% more Physical damage per hit.
- 3/3 Improved Lightning Shield: 15% more damage from Lightning Shield's orbs. A ball fires at whatever hits you, at most one every few seconds and three per cast: steady bonus threat, not a pack-holding tool.
- 1/1 Shamanistic Focus: Earth Shock costs 45% less, and it's your single-target threat button.
- 3/3 Anticipation and 5/5 Toughness: +6% dodge and +10% Stamina.
- 1/1 Stormstrike, 1/1 Spirit Weapons, 2/2 Improved Stormstrike: Spirit Weapons gives you parry and +30% threat with Rockbiter. Improved Stormstrike resets Stormstrike on every dodge and parry, so the more they miss, the more you hit.
- 2/2 Mental Quickness, 5/5 Maelstrom Weapon, 1/1 Rage of the Farseer: instant Lightning Bolts for threat on a second target, and 30% attack speed for the big pull.
Restoration: 9 points
- 5/5 Totemic Focus: Magma Totem (20 seconds) and Earthbind Totem go down on most packs, and Totemic Projection moves the rest. 25% cheaper adds up.
- 2/2 Improved Reincarnation: +4% maximum health, and Reincarnation every 40 minutes.
- 2/5 Tidal Focus: +2% Hit, so Earth Shock and Stormstrike land.
Races
Best races
Horde: Orc. Axe Specialization gives +1% critical strike chance with all attacks and spells while you hold an axe or two-handed axe, the weapon you want anyway. Blood Fury increases Attack Power and Spell Power by 10% for 15 seconds every 2 minutes; line it up with Rage of the Farseer. Hardiness shortens stuns by 20%, and Shatter Curse blocks Curses and Banes for 8 seconds.
Horde tank: Tauren. Endurance adds 5% health and 1% Hit, and War Stomp stuns up to 5 enemies for 2 seconds when a pull goes wrong.
Alliance: Dwarf (new). Mace Specialization gives +1% critical strike chance with maces and two-handed maces. Stoneform removes Bleeds, Poisons and Diseases and cuts Physical damage taken by 10% for 8 seconds, which is also a tank cooldown.
All playable races
- Orc: Axe Specialization, Blood Fury, Hardiness, Shatter Curse.
- Tauren: War Stomp, Endurance, Plainsrunning (up to 30% run speed while moving) and Cultivation.
- Troll: Berserking for a 10-second attack speed burst every 3 minutes, Beast Slaying (+5% damage to Beasts), Regeneration and Rapid Regeneration for 50% of your health over 6 seconds between pulls.
- Windshaper Skyborne (Horde, new): Wind Blessed for 1% melee Haste, Elemental Insight for 5% damage against Elementals, and Skysight and Walk on Air for travel.
- Dwarf (Alliance, new): Mace Specialization, Stoneform, Big Game Hunter (+5% damage to Beasts) and Find Treasure.
Rotation
Buffs
- Rockbiter Weapon on your weapon from 24 (earlier ranks before that). Imbues last an hour now. Switch to Windfury Weapon at 30.
- Lightning Shield up at all times. It's cheap with Shamanistic Focus and hits back for free.
- Strength of Earth Totem when you're clearing a camp. Buff totems last 5 minutes, so one drop covers several pulls.
Single-target pull
- Pull with Flame Shock from 20 yards, or run in with the mob already tagged.
- Stand still and swing. Your two-hander does the damage.
- Use Earth Shock as your damage shock once Flame Shock is ticking, and keep it for casters that need interrupting.
- Flame Shock again when it drops off and your shocks are ready. Stormstrike joins this loop at 40.
- A mob that runs at low health gets Frost Shock.
Two mobs
Drop Searing Totem and fight both. Your Flame Shock goes on the one you aren't hitting, and the totem attacks one enemy at a time. If a third joins, Stoneclaw Totem taunts everything within 8 yards for a few seconds while you finish one.
Downtime
- Heal between pulls with Healing Wave or higher ranks, and drink when you're under half mana.
- Ghost Wolf between every camp. With Improved Ghost Wolf it's instant, so there's no reason to walk.
Before the pull
- Windfury Weapon on your two-hander, Lightning Shield on yourself.
- Drop your group's totems with Call of the Elements: Strength of Earth Totem, Mana Spring Totem and one Air totem. You keep one totem per element, so pick Windfury Totem for a group of warriors and rogues (you don't benefit from it with Windfury Weapon) or Grace of Air Totem when Agility helps the group more.
- Move the set with Totemic Projection when the boss moves.
Priority
- Stormstrike on cooldown.
- Lightning Bolt at five Maelstrom stacks. It's instant and free, and lands with Stormstrike's 20% if you cast it within 12 seconds of the strike.
- Earth Shock when Stormstrike's bonus is up and you have no five-stack Lightning Bolt ready.
- Flame Shock when it has fallen off the target and your shocks are ready.
- Melee. Everything else is filler around your swing.
Cooldowns
Open with Rage of the Farseer and your racial. Berserking has the same 3-minute cooldown as Rage of the Farseer, so Trolls press both together every time. Blood Fury comes back every 2 minutes: use it on cooldown, and it lines up with Rage of the Farseer every third use. 30% attack speed means more Windfury rolls, more Flurry and faster Maelstrom stacks.
Mana
- Improved Stormstrike runs your mana regeneration at 50% while casting for 15 seconds after every Stormstrike. On an 8-second cooldown, that's always on.
- Maelstrom Lightning Bolts are free. Your mana goes on Shocks, totems and Lightning Shield.
- Carry Major Mana Potion for long fights, and never skip Stormstrike to save mana.
Setup
- Rockbiter Weapon on your weapon. With Spirit Weapons, every swing makes 30% more threat.
- A one-handed axe or mace and a shield for armor and blocks.
- Lightning Shield on, Stoneskin Totem down, and a Fire totem for the pack.
You have no single-target taunt. Every mob stays on you because of threat you built, so open hard on every pull and never let the healer heal before you've hit the pack.
Single target
- Open with Earth Shock. Its threat is high and it interrupts a caster at the same time.
- Stormstrike on cooldown and every time a dodge or parry resets it.
- Earth Shock again inside Stormstrike's 20% window.
- Instant Lightning Bolts at five Maelstrom stacks.
Packs
- Drop Magma Totem in the middle of the pack as it reaches you, then Fire Nova around it every 10 seconds.
- Tab through the pack with Flame Shock and five-stack Lightning Bolts on the mobs you're not hitting.
- Keep Lightning Shield up for its extra threat. It fires one ball every few seconds, three per cast, so recast it between pulls.
- Loose mob on the healer: fight next to the healer and drop Stoneclaw Totem, which taunts every mob within 8 yards of the totem. For a healer standing farther away, move the totem onto them with Totemic Projection. Tauren add War Stomp to stun up to five.
Cooldowns
- Rage of the Farseer on the pull, for faster swings and more threat while the pack settles.
- Stoneform or Blood Fury as needed. Reincarnation is your emergency plan if the healer loses you.
Stat priority
Leveling
- Strength
- Intellect
- Critical Strike
- Agility
- Stamina
Strength is your Attack Power. Intellect is Attack Power too, one to one through Mental Dexterity, and it pays for your shocks and heals. Critical Strike feeds Flurry. On a quest reward, a big weapon upgrade always beats anything on armor.
Raid
- Hit
- Strength
- Critical Strike
- Intellect
- Agility
- Haste
In Forever, Hit and Critical Strike are one stat each for melee and spells, so one Hit item covers your swings and your Lightning Bolts. Take Hit until you stop missing, then Strength. Critical Strike comes next because it drives Flurry and Elemental Devastation. Intellect is worth far more than it was in Classic: it's Attack Power, Spell Power through Mental Quickness, and mana. Items that reduce your chance to be dodged or parried are excellent against bosses.
Dungeon tank
- Stamina
- Armor
- Hit
- Strength
- Agility
- Intellect
Stamina and armor first: you're the one the healer keeps alive. Hit makes sure your Earth Shocks land, and Strength and Intellect make your threat. Agility adds dodge, which also resets Stormstrike.
Gear
Weapons
Your two-hander is most of your damage while leveling. Buy or quest for a new one every 8–10 levels, and pick the slowest weapon with the highest top-end damage: Windfury procs from 30 add Attack Power to each extra hit, and Stormstrike at 40 hits for normal weapon damage, so a slow, heavy weapon keeps paying off. Orcs want axes, Dwarves want maces.
Armor
Take anything with Strength and Intellect, then Agility and Stamina. Intellect on caster leather is not wasted on you: it's Attack Power. Mail comes at 40.
Totem items
Keep Earth Totem, Fire Totem, Water Totem and Air Totem in your bags. The class quests are in the Shaman leveling guide.
What you're gearing for
The slowest two-hander with the highest damage you can get, then Hit, Strength and Critical Strike on everything else. Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, which open on December 9, 2026, bring new tier sets. Pieces with both Strength and Intellect are made for you, including the mail you can wear from 40.
Consumables
- Elixir of the Mongoose: Agility and 2% critical strike chance for 30 minutes.
- Juju Power and Winterfall Firewater for more Strength and Attack Power.
- Mageblood Elixir for mana per 5 seconds, and Major Mana Potion for long fights.
- Ankh for Reincarnation.
What you're gearing for
A one-handed axe or mace, a shield with armor and Stamina, and Stamina on every slot. Keep your raid two-hander in the bags for dungeons where another tank takes the pull.
Consumables
Elixir of Greater Defense for 450 armor, Major Troll's Blood Elixir for health regeneration, and Major Mana Potion for the pull that turns into three.
Professions
Mining and Blacksmithing or Mining and Engineering is the raid pair. Blacksmiths make two-handed axes and maces along the way, and Engineering brings bombs and utility for tough fights.
Skinning and Mining is the leveling pair: you kill beasts all day, and both professions sell well on the auction house.
For gold, Skinning and Herbalism works too. Instant Ghost Wolf takes you from node to node without stopping.
Group play and dungeons
Your job as DPS is damage and totems. As a tank, it's threat and staying alive.
- Totems for melee. Strength of Earth Totem and one Air totem, Windfury Totem or Grace of Air Totem, are the core melee buffs you bring. Put yourself in the melee group.
- Interrupts. Earth Shock locks the school for 2 seconds on a 6-second cooldown.
- Purge enemy buffs with Purge.
- Cleansing. Tremor Totem, Poison Cleansing Totem and Disease Cleansing Totem cover Fear, Poison and Disease for the whole party.
- Emergency heals. Lesser Healing Wave is a 1.5-second heal. Use it to save a healer or finish a fight after a wipe.
- Tanking without a taunt. You have no single-target taunt. Build threat with Earth Shock and Stormstrike, pull packs to Magma Totem and Fire Nova, and use Stoneclaw Totem (8 yards around the totem) to peel mobs off the healer.
Two Shamans in one group don't stack Windfury Totem or Grace of Air Totem. Flametongue Totem doesn't stack with itself, a weapon imbue or Windfury Totem. Split your totems with the other Shaman before the pull.
PvP
Enhancement kills fast in PvP. Stormstrike into a five-stack instant Lightning Bolt lands the Stormstrike bonus on a spell your target can't interrupt. Frost Shock keeps runners in range, Grounding Totem eats a Polymorph or Fear, and Tremor Totem breaks Fear for your team. Purge shields and Blessings on sight. Earthbind Totem slows everything around you, and Rage of the Farseer turns a stun on your target into a kill.
Tips
Maelstrom stacks last 30 seconds. At five stacks, wait for Stormstrike if it's less than a couple of seconds away, then cast the instant Lightning Bolt inside the 20% window.
Windfury Weapon on your main hand turns off Windfury Totem for you, and Flametongue Weapon turns off Flametongue Totem. Use your own imbue and drop the totem for the rest of the group.
Your two-hander comes first. Replace your weapon before any other slot, and check the auction house at every trainer visit.
Intellect is a melee stat now. Don't vendor gear with Strength and Intellect.
Ghost Wolf everywhere. Instant and indoors at 2/2 Improved Ghost Wolf, it's faster than walking into any cave.
Train Flame Shock and Earth Shock ranks. They cost 45% less with Shamanistic Focus, and every new rank hits harder.
